Posted - Apr 27 2008 : 11:51:56 AM Well), not really. This morning, while making coffee, Justin noticed this "unwelcome guest" on our shagbark maple--obviously going out for breakfast him (or her) self!
So, dh grabs my antique hay fork (which, incidentally is hanging on the wall in our living room) and goes outside to get the snake from the tree and eating baby birds and whatever else...CREEPY!
Now in the yard..
Taking it to the backyard...
Until the Snake gets mad and dh changes his mind and dumps it over the fence!!!

Posted - Apr 30 2008 : 05:58:11 AM Brenda, you and my husband are on the SAME page--he can do snakes, but NO spiders and NO camel crickets!
Ooooh, Jessica...this guy/gal? was harmless, but a 7 rattlers? Um, I'd be heading for the hills!
Thanks, Mary Jane...we love our little birds and chipmunks and the like and I said, "well, he's not going to kill those babies!!!" and out Jus went (with my antique hay fork off the wall--now I look at it and shiver!).
Oh, Ann, you'll be here before you know it :)

Posted - Apr 27 2008 : 7:03:30 PM I know...it was kind of a weird reality! When he yelled for me to come and look at the tree and then we went outside, I was just kindof stunned and we always have the camera handy so I wanted to take a photo. It must have realized we were very near because you could see the muscles tense up--CREEPY.
Ronna, I emailed the snake guy at U.K. because we found the first in the backyard last Spring, where the dogs go and run all over, so I didn't want them in harms way. He said they were harmless and normally would avoid human and predator contact...and we were incident free, so I'm hoping for the same this Spring!
Sorry, Sherri...normally my barnyard buddies post actuall ARE buddies and have much more fur :) I couldn't help but introduce the post like Al Pacino, "Say Hello to My Little Friend!"

Posted - Apr 27 2008 : 6:35:16 PM I did not know snakes could go up a tree like that. Have seen them in trees (in photos only), never thought about how it got there. Yikes. Are they harmless to humans and dogs, as in not poisonous? I don't like snakes and rodents! So glad neither of my kids ever wanted them as "pets". |

Posted - Apr 27 2008 : 6:30:02 PM We had an even bigger one last year, Karin. The snake guy at Univ. of Kentucky called it a black rat snake, and that it's very beneficial to our little "microcosm"...they eat rodents and small birds...which I guess is what he/she was crawling up the tree for. I don't want it eating my birds so I'll try to interfere with mother nature when I see it!
The whole time dh was fooling with it, I kept saying over and over (between squeals) like a mantra "it's beneficial, very beneficial, it's benefical...!"
