Wowsers! So very exciting -
I just became a chicken mama last week when I bought 3 RIR 19wk. old pullets from the feed store. Today I went out to the Palais de Poulets to say good morning and give them brekkie when lo and behold! a perfect little brown egg :) Yay!

Hi Meg,
Thanks to your blog, I was inspired to name our coop the Palais des Poulets. I give you full credit. Thanks! We have 26 chickens in there and my favorite is a RIR named Sallie. They are the best breed!
Cheers,
Kristen

How sweet! I remember when my mom brought the first eggs up from our barn. They were tiny and bluish in color. She kept them on top of the oil stove in a small basket. None of us wanted to eat them!
This is just the beginning!!
I bought a pair of Rhode Island Red pullets today. They are being introduced to Flora as I write this. So far, it's going ok. Flora has been the queen of the roost and now she has to share.

What a surprise I had this morning when I saw three pretty brown eggs in the nest box - what good, smart girls I have!

Melanie, 30 chicks! Wow, what fun. I can imagine them all peeping away, cute as can be. Yep, these are my very first chickens. I bought three R.I.R. 19wk old pullets from the feed store, they were 7.50 each. And I went in with an old chicken fancier 'round here who is doing a big order from Murray McMurray in the states and is going to pick them up across the border. So I have six little peeps coming my way soon. I'm getting heritage and rare breeds from them. One buff orpington, one silver laced wyandotte, two speckled sussex, and two araucanas. They should be here in a couple weeks.

Oh and the feed store was selling chicks for about 1$ each, but they only had a couple breeds.

What a lovely surprise for you! I love the feeling of warm chicken eggs in my hands. My favorites are the easter egg colored eggs, but I do get some pretty huge brown ones and an itty bitty white bantam egg that is almost to cute to take.

oh, one more thing.... a question to you all....
I was wondering how much do chicks cost in your area? (I am curious to see the different prices in the U.S.A and Canada)

Meg, how many "ladies" do you have (that is how I refer to my chickens too!!) when did you get them? Is this your first time with birds?
I got my first chicks last June. We have 10 ladies and I love them so much and have been having so much fun with them that I ordered 30 more. 10 white, 10 brown and 10 black. I can't wait until their little fuzzy faces arrive!

I am sooo happy for you. What a wonderful experience! Pretty soon, you won't know what to do with all those eggs you'll be getting every morning.

Blessings, Lea

Congrats on the egg, Meg! I love the feeling of gathering eggs first thing in the morning. It feels so good to have something fresh and wholesome being produced, doesn't it!

Not in the nest box, lol - it was off in the far corner of the droppings board! I think I'll plant a few golf balls in the nest box to give then the right idea...

That is always an exciting moment! Wait 'til you get a double-yolker!

Did it get laid in the nest box, or did you find it on the floor?

Congrats,

Lori
