Posted - Mar 01 2008 : 03:10:41 AM I've noticed lately that Girly Girl's one eye looks funny. Kind of foggy in the middle. Would that be a sign of blindness? I've tried testing to see if she can see on that side of her face but it's inconclusive. She is getting up there in age. She turned 11 in January.

Posted - Mar 02 2008 : 09:39:57 AM Sure sounds like a cataract. An old dog will have a blue milky center in the eye. They can still see fairly well though. A blind dog will have a pure white center in the eye and most get around with no trouble at all - as long as you don't move the furniture around every week. My old Miniature Schnauzer who was 15 when he died had old age cateract but still got around just fine. I wouldn't put any of my dogs - and most are show dogs - through the surgery as it's just too hard on an old dog. I wouldn't worry too much as it's just a part of the aging process - as long as the eye looks healthy. Give her a hug. Tina TEE JAYS Schnauzers

Posted - Mar 01 2008 : 12:36:01 PM Yep, agreed. Sounds like cataract. Supposedly, if caught early, some vets do laser surgery to remove this, but it is $$$$ for the procedure, and some people don't want the risk of surgery and the expense for older dogs. You'd be surprised though, many animals are very resilient under adverse physical conditions, so unless both eyes seem to be bothering her or she seems depressed, I wouldn't know what to tell you Lisa..other than to keep checking or take her to a vet to confirm...or just let her be if she seems happy.

Posted - Mar 01 2008 : 05:46:53 AM A little fogginess could be cataracts forming, or just old age. We had a lab mix that got really cloudy, but could see up until the day that she died. The vet always said she didn't have cataracts forming until maybe the last year or so, and even then they were so minor he couldn't operate.
