Ick! That's just gross, lol! Friesians actually have 'rat' tails; no wool, so we leave them long and natural.

Do you band or cut off thier tails, I know this woman who drys thier tails and puts a red ribbon at the top where it fell off and sells them for christmas decorations.

I know there is a company in Colorado that send collected semen through a special centrifuge and will guarantee a colt or filly result (in horses) I believe the male sperm weigh slightly less?

Now, how we ended up with two whites is beyond me, lol! Grandpa Zeus is white, though, so perhaps that's it.
I don't think diet has anything to do with what sex you end up with. We feed the same year after year, starting with a lean diet then 'flushing' to increase weight gain just prior to breeding. Some years we get a toss up...just not last year. Hopefully the two who lamb later in the year will give us some girls.

Whenever any of our animals have boys I usually lament about how they're not helping the farm and need to be gotten rid of. My husband will joke back how the men around here don't get any respect. HA HA
sex selection...it makes sense. I've read similar happenings in the reptile and amphibian world. I bet there have been studies on this at the Ag colleges.

In the zoo business I recently found out some species of animals can actually select the embryo's sex according to environmental conditions.
An over abundance of resources leads to mostly males being born to carry on a strong genetic line. Harsher conditions and fewer resources will produce more females.
Anyone else heard of this in domestics? |

I have had years like that..with sheep and goats both..and even though they are so so so cute when they are little I just have had such bad luck with grown males...haha. I never managed to get my two ewes bred this year so I won't even get any lambs at all this spring if that makes ya feel better. Since Mona is going all the way until Halloween to calf I sure am hoping for a heifer calf again!! She sort owes me that after being such a stinker to get bred, right????

One of my favorite sheep ever was an icelandic wether I kept for wool for about 5 years. I still have his mom, my Juliet, who will be 8 in May. (and his half sister Trixie, who will be 5 in May)

I love boys - I know that does not make business sense but I just love their strength. Give Bessie a big kiss from this two legged mommy. Thanks so much for sharing the picture. I am still trying to get my newest kids to get their mother to step out of the way so I can get a snapshot.
