My old doxie is just a big ball of gas these days . I know it's a stinky subject, but does anyone have any idea of what could be causing this? I'm sorry to describe this, but it totally smells like cooked polish sausage! We can hardly stand to be around him. Does anyone have any ideas to alleviate this problem. As I've posted before, the poor old guy is on his last legs as it is, and I hate to make a big deal about it and hurt his feelings, but Lordy!!

If you have access to and can afford the non mainline dog foods, try Wellness brand. They make a new formulation called Wellness Core that does not have any grains and excess fats but does have tons of veggies and high protein. I order from Care-a-Lot pet supply or buy it from our local natural foods store.
My dog gets gassy if I feed her too much cheese in one day. She gets a little piece of string cheese for crating if we have to leave somewhere.
And here's a funny.....talk about corn and gas LAst summer we planted a strain I never heard of. It was supposed to be super sweet. It sure was good, and we decided to share some w/ the dog (off the cob of course). So she got a portion too. The next day we had obedience class and couldn't figure out why Jasmine wasn't listening, and just seemed "out of it" . Coming home, we were all pretty much driving w/ heads out the window! And that's when I remembered the corn. Poor thing

I had been avoiding the corn since we got our pup because she is allergic to it - it makes her skin itch, so I know it's not corn. He's some better today, thank goodness!

I don't know..my oldest basset hound (Stella is 10 and 1/2) is pretty bad that way!! I do notice the difference when she has corn for sure...so I avoid that in her food as much as possible!

My parents had a chocolate lab with the same issue. The vet suggested feeding him plain yogurt. Worked like a charm. |

I am convinced that my Great Dane farts could be bottled and used for national strategic defense 
It's not so bad amongst family & close friends, but when we have acquaintance type company, it is hard to explain the overwhelming room clearing stench |

Our lab mix is El Grosso and is always gassy. He can clear a room in a second! We have an herbal oral spray for them called "smog dog" that eliminates bad breath and "odors" on the other end. It really works for him, but we often forget for a few weeks and then WHAMMO! P-U!
I'll try what Alee suggested with him, though. Sounds like a good idea simply to give their digestive tracts a rest.

Sometimes corn gives dogs gas, it is the main ingredient to most dog food. We use a lamb and rice formula for our stinky bulldog. Make sure to check labels. Some lamb and rice is mainly corn.
JULIE- flax should do the same, without the stink!

my dog has a skin issue so we feed him fish oil. You should smell that gas!!!!

I will try that!! I switched his food to Senior Nutrition because his backbone was sticking out so bad - I don't think he's getting the nutrition out of his food anymore.

He might need a change of diet to something easier to digest. If he is really stinky (which it sounds like he is) our vet always recommends giving their digestive track a day or two off. Just give them some white rice and mozzarella cheese both of which are neutral ph for a dog and easy to digest. Maybe he needs some sensitive stomache food for elderly dogs?
