How many stray cats do you have showing up around your house? I have seen atleast 3 since we have lived here, about 9 months. One is very friendly and lets me pick him/her up, the other eats and runs. We had a big tom cat but haven't seen him in a couple of months. Now some kitty is leaving us "presents" at our front door..I have never lived out in the country before now. It's very surprising to me how many strays are out here

we have had two pregnant queens show up and we let them stay and have their babes, usually keep one and then bring her to a no kill shelter. The feral males that show up that are agressive, Rob usually ends up shooting them. It's sad, but when they come and attack our outside cats (who are loving and don't roam) he has to protect them. These cats aren't even approachable. It's very very sad.

I seem to be the deposit box for unwanted animals in my area. I currently have several barn cats, rabbits, 2 snakes, 1 lizard, a few rats, guinea pig, etc. My husband is not a farm boy and he thinks this is all very odd. I like the variety of life I have around me but would give the cats back if I could! They are a pain in the butt- not the nice kind of sit on your lap cats!

When we lived in the country we had a lot of cats because of this problem- and sometimes the strays showed up already pregnant. We had a male cat (neutered) that wandered through several homes we think. The would stop by a few times a week and then be on his way. He sure was a sweetie.

Another cat we had- My parents picked her up at a mountain cafe along with her litter of kittens. She had been dumped and had a broken leg that had already set. She was the sweetest little cat. Looked like a purebred Russian Blue. And she lived to be around 21!!!

Me, too, Marybeth. I'm right up there on the soapbox with you. That's why I have five dogs and five cats. All the dogs were 'throwaways' - booted out of some random passing car. The first thing I do with any animal is spay/neuter.

People think that since you live in a rural area you want all their unwanted animals. Mean and cruel they are. My friend used to just go ahead and spay or neuter any cat that appeared on her property so the problem would not escalate. Some people should not have animals--they just throw them away. As you can see this is one of my soapboxes. MB
