Need some suggestions. We have a house that sits in the woods. We also have lots of birds which we feed all year and love to watch. The problem is we built our home to let in the outdoors from every view, kind of like being in a tree house. But the birds keep trying to come in. They are hitting the windows hourly sometimes more. Most times they are just stunned but lots of time too they die. It's hard to pick up a Hairy or Downy whose has tried to come in. They are also leaving feather and body prints on the windows. I have tried hanging things on the window but they even hit my 3 blue star flag in their attempts to come in. Seems to be happening more in the winter then during the summer. Any suggestions? I would hate to take down the feeders and one side of the house is landscaped with water and feeders to enhance bird and wildlife visits.

Hi!
I too live in the woods, feed birds, and have many windows. I've tried lots of things, but what worked best are the adhesive decals, on the OUTSIDE of the window.
One of the funniest I tried-I had read somewhere that hanging something like feathers or pine cones on ribbons so they hang on the outside of the window, sort of blocking it, would work. Well, we find lots of turkey feathers in the woods. So, I tied some together with ribbon, and hung it so it was hanging down in front of our sliding glass door. The next morning it got windy, and I was awoken by our dog have an absolute fit barking and growling and the feathers blowing around the outside of the door. Maybe it would have worked, but I took them down anyway!

the clings in the shape of raptors work well. I use them at the various nature centers I consult.

We had the same problem at my house growing up. We put up those static cling window decorations. Having thing just in front of the window isn't enough- you actually have to disrupt the bird's vision of the window for it to work. Basically to a bird, the window reflects the sky so they don't "see" the window. They think they are flying into more sky. So if put up stickers or static cling stickers they will recognize that something is "wrong" with that section of "Sky" and so will avoid it.

Hi Betty Jo, your post says you have something on the windows...I know there are stickers made to adhere to the window just to keep the birds from flying into them...don't know how effective they are...perhaps a bird enthusiast's website might have suggestions.
