We recently added chickens to our little farm, we couldn't be more thrilled and I just had to share! There are 8 of them!

We just got them to the farm but someone was keeping them for us until we got the Chicken Condo built, which took longer as hubby had surgery that held the process up.

They are laying an average of 7 eggs a day, good Lord, I have more eggs than I know what to do with but I guess that is a good problem!!

Anyhoo, thanks for letting me brag about the girls!

Well, we have a pasture about 3 acres that is fenced in where Baxter, the lab, can not get into with the gate closed, in that pasture is two donkeys. We have been talking about letting them out to free range on that pasture when the days get longer so we can see how they handle that. I just don't them to fly over the 4 ft cattle wire with two strands of barbwire on the top fence to the neighbors. This is all so new to us, I am overly parnoid about my girls getting hurt, lost or attacked.

Also, I am worried about hawks getting them if they are outside there fenced area, as there is chicken wire on the top of their fenced lot too.

I asked and the chickens are Red Star Sexlinks. And that is interesting why they are called sexlinks, thanks for sharing that with me!

Michelle....yes, the feed costs way too much! I get organic feed, but also give them stuff from the garden and produce that's past its prime. Your barn is so pretty! I agree that free ranging is very risky. Could you make more than one fenced area outside so the "off-site gound" can be planted? That's what we are trying to do, hoping they'll have clover and grasses to eat while outside.

Yep...free ranging might not be a good plan with a bird dog on the place. Even my bassets...who arn't known for their energy...will chase down the chickens if mine are out..so mine have a covered run and get loose only if we are out watching them. Your hens are beautiful. Sexlinks are a nice breed..called that because you can tell which sex they are at birth..the cockerells are very different looking than the pullets of that breed

18-20 eggs a day? Wow, that is alot..I am imagining your feed bill is pretty steep, too! We can't believe how quickly we are going through feed!

Thanks!

Well, we want to free range ours some but wondering if we can let them out to run after getting home from work then closing the gate when they go into roost. Don't know yet if that will work so we have to do a little research on it. I don't want to leave them out when I am not home in fear of something getting them. Our property is completely fenced in but I want to be on the look out for the neighbors dogs in case they want to slip under the gate.

Another reason I don't want to let them run while I am not there even though he is in a pen until we get home, I am afraid one might fly into his pen..Baxter..bird loving dog that he is...
There he is with his nose to the barn as he could hear them clucking in there!!

I will have to ask hubby what kind they are as I am not sure sure...sixlinks or sexlinks, something like that I thought he said.

There "coup" is actually in our barn, we had to do a bunch of modifying to what use to be the old corn crib, perfect home for them though, they can exit the barn through an opening to their fenced yard.

Here is one checking out the boxes, they have yet to lay eggs in..urghh..they lay them behind the feeder at this point!

Michelle, they look like very happy chickie-birds! Nice house your husband built--I'm sure the girls appreciate it and are paying back with the eggs. What breed are they?

We're generally getting 18-20 eggs per day but... we take them to church and hand out cartons with the admonition to "bring back the cartons!" Folks seem to be glad to do it

Congrats! You will have such a great time with your girls. They look a bit like ours, too!! Great egg producers. We free range ours and they wander all over the farm....what a hoot to see them come running....they run so fast...and their heads always beat there bodies to wherever they are running. Funny, funny birds!!
