the feed store is getting in a late shipment of aracuana, buff orpington, and rhode island red chicks at the end of the month. woohoo. I know they will be full sized not bantams, but oh my..I am excited about the aracaunas. They will be $2.25 each though.
ooh choices, choices!
So..who here raises these types of birds?
Tell me what you can about them please. (I'll be getting only pullets of anything that I wind up with)

so far the buff orpington seems to be the "go getter gal"..she jumps around on our laps to the higher and higher position that she can find. They both make these sweet little chortly cheeps. Not really peeps exactly, but more like a peepy purr. real low and sort of like crickets sound like.
It is really sweet.
The ameracauna is a bit shyer, but they both love to be petted already.

Got my babies today!!! I got one darling Americauna girl..she has the prettiest markings. And 1 Buff orpington gal.
I was going to name them "peep" and "cluck" but my hubby wanted them to have longer names so the Americauna is named "Henny Penny" and the Buff is named "Chicken Little"..ha.
I will take pictures hopefully later today, and I need to get a picture of "Sunny" the duckling too as she has grown alot lately.

By the way, the price of eggs here is out of sight. A dozen eggs is $2.39, so that is another reason to have some of our own. I like the idea of them not being confined and not pumped full of drugs. I do think when I do this I am going to have to keep them protected, we have lots of big hawks around. Mother Earth News has a plan for a portable coop that I plan on building, I am thinking I can hitch it to the back of mower and pull it where I want it.
Good Luck all,
Barbara

Hi Karin, Your comment cracked me up, only because when I said I wanted to get goats my Hubby kept saying no. As usual I ingnored him and now have two. He is saying the same thing about chickens, I keep wondering why he doesn't just save his breath. He has to know that I will do what I want any way, lol.

Good Luck to you, Barbara

I have Buffs and the RIR. Both are great layers and very personable.

The buffs are so fluffy you just can't help but pick them up.

With daily love they really warm up to you.

I have Buffs, and love them. The girls are so gentle, even when in their boxes laying don't peck me when I get eggs. I must admit, though, Mr. Roo isn't reliable with his feeder servants. He does go in for attacks, but will herd the girls (and boys) into the house for the night and always protects them from hawks. The lesser Buff roo is a sweetheart, but a bit standoffish with us. He obeys Mr. Roo... Tina, you're lucky to be able to get these in the autumn! I hope you do get all three varieties. I love to see the different colors running around. Mine all get along with each other so well...

I love my Buff Orpingtons. They're great around children, and our rooster (who died of natural causes) was more of a "chicken" than any rooster I've ever seen! We definitely didn't have to fear any attacks from the rear, that other types indulge in.

the owner said they were getting in quite a few pullets. So,I took that to mean that they will be sexed.

I have RIRs and I love them and plan to try Orpingtons next year since they are one of the most docile breeds, but get fairly large. I would like to find some Araucanas, but it is very difficult to find purebred ones, the ones at the feed store and in most catalogs are known as "Easter Eggers", they are a Araucana/Americauna mix, but they do have green and blue eggs, so they would be fun anyway. Is your feed store selling them sexed? Ours around here don't do that. But anyway, any of the 3 kinds would be fun.
SheilaC Posted - Nov 10 2007 : 7:22:30 PM
Our Rhode Island Reds are very people-friendly (or maybe just looking for treats!) they will follow us around and stay closer than some of the others. Our araucanas are maybe more skittish and one is kind of mean, but they do lay such pretty eggs!! I do like a variety as well. . .more fun!!
Tina Michelle Posted - Nov 10 2007 : 6:02:20 PM
yes Aunt Jenny, I already told the owner that I would for sure be back to get an aracauna...or two.:0)

They are all great breeds...you can't go wrong with any of them. The RRs are my favorites..but I would get some of each...I like variety in my chickens!! Those green eggs are so fun..you MUST get some aracaunas!!!

I have all three and for me the Aracuna's seem to be my best layers. The Buffs and R.R's have the funniest personalities. I just love them! They remind me of the times when all of Aunts would get together and jabber away!!! Keep us posted on what you decide to get. It's so exciting to get new chicks at this time of the year! We only get them in the Spring here. Good Luck! Hugs, Lu
