Hi, ladies! I hope some of you can help me out. I am looking for an Angora Rabbit breeder somewhere within driving distance of Northwest Louisiana. I've been internet searching, but so far, the closest breeder is in Kansas and North Carolina, Kentucky & Virginia. The lady in Kansas still hasn't returned my email, so I'm not REAL sure she's still in business. I want these rabbits for their fleece for spinning, and because I have an option of 'plucking' or shearing them, and don't have to hurt the animal just for its fur. Also, I've never spun before, but will be taking a class around the first of the year. Some friends are cotton farmers, and they've said I can have any of the 'fallout' that I want (cotton that falls out of and around the shipping containers or left on the plant -- fallout is MY word, I am so not a cotton farmer -- can't do it on sixty acres!) I'm also interested in any input from any of you spinners out there. Oh. We're also looking into Angora goats for their mohair fleece. Can anyone in the forum help or offer some advice? How very interesting. I was fascinated watching someone spin wool yesterday with a spinning wheel. Wow! Hats off to spinners. I have seen angora rabbits at the county fair. Could you contact the county fair office and perhaps get contact information? Or a local 4-H group? Perhaps give them your contact info. to share with a family/individual, so they can contact you? Helps out kids to buy their bunny offspring, as Jennifer/small graces puts so well.

I found a supplier of angora's in my area. I am going to do my research alot first, then go from there.
But I did find an area breeder.

Just jumping in here to say...if anyone in NY is looking for wonderful, easy to handle, cuties. We have 4 satin/english cross angora babies. They are 11 wks old, and we want to find angora familiar homes for them. One smokybrown, two white, one black. I would post photos, but the camera was stolen with the computer, last weekend. They are only $20.00 each and it goes to my 13 y/o daughter. (her rabbits.) Just email me.

You probably know this already but there are several different types of angora rabbits recognized by the ARBA, (ANGORA, ENGLISH ANGORA, FRENCH ANGORA, GIANT ANGORA, SATIN ANGORA) and each has it's own specialty club, so be sure to check with the specific club regarding the type you want. Also your local affiliate of the ARBA would be a great place to start, there are several in LA. They can let you know of any members who breed angoras and also upcoming show dates where you can meet with breeders from a broader area who might have stock for sale.

Hi, Judith! Hi, Aunt Jenny! Thanks for the input. After reading your response Judith, I will be sure to try the EASIEST fiber to learn to spin!!! It will be a while before I can actually spin my own homegrown fiber, as I'm still having trouble locating the rabbits. Aunt Jenny, I did try the ARBA, but most of the members are in the northeast, northwest, or just plain north (Ohio, Illinois, etc.). But I'm a determined woman, and will keep searching. I have a lead on a lady in Alba, Texas, which will still be a full day to drive, but I haven't heard back yet. Thanks for all y'alls support. I'll take all the support and information I can get!!!!!

I used to have alot of angora rabbits..only one now. It is more difficult to spin..but fun. For sure do wool first if you are a beginning spinner.
I wish I could help you out with finding new angora rabbits..have you checked the breeder list on the ARBA website??? Angora Rabbit breeders of America..and you could check with any local people with rabbits..if they have any rabbits they show at all they would maybe know others who have your breeds. Good luck!!

The only tip I would have about spinning angora is to learn to spin wool first. This is what my spinning teacher said when I told her I wanted to spin my dog's fur (undercoat from a long haired German Shepherd Dog). The reason is that wool has little "velcro-like" hooks on the individual fibers and makes it easier to spin and turn into yarn...vs the angora and dog hair and virtually any other that is smooth and takes a bit more skill to spin. I have experienced this first hand. I am pretty good at wool, not so much with the dog hair. So, learn how to spin the wool and when you gain the control to spin the finer yarn, then branch out to the other fibers. Less frustrating. Also, cotton is a short fiber, and hence, more difficult to spin too. Silk is a real bear (for me, anyhow). So that's my two cents. Good luck in finding your bunnies.

Hi, Robin and Tina. I found a breeder in Chattanooga, TN. Not sure just how close that is to you, but I'll bet its closer to you than me! I haven't heard back from her yet, but if I do, and if you want the information, I'll let you know!

My daughter and I are looking too. She is 13 and really wants to do this. My mom had purchased some from the breeder here in VA but they got sick and died. Not related to anything from the breeder. We are in the process of getting a cage ready before we start looking for the rabbits. Good luck to you both.

I'd actually like to be able to find angora rabbits here in Florida..but haven't had any success either.
