I'm having issues with anemia in goats... we've tested for worms (negative), copper deficiency (normal) and now we're not sure what's wrong with my little buck.
Anyone else having issues with their goats?

It turns out that he probably did have worms and just tested negative because I'd wormed him and it took time for him to recover. He got daily injections of B12 and a bunch of other stuff, plus he was wormed again and just to be on the safe side, we gave him a copper capsule. We figure it was probably worms because his two buddies (who share his pen) tested positive for worms.
He seems to be okay now and gearing up for breeding season!

Anemia, one of the more common blood disorders, occurs when the level of healthy red blood cells (RBCs) in the body becomes too low. This can lead to health problems because RBCs contain hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to the body's tissues. anemia can cause a variety of complications, including fatigue and stress on bodily organs.
Anemia can be caused by many things, but the three main bodily mechanisms that produce it are:
excessive destruction of RBCs
blood loss
inadequate production of RBCs
Among many other causes, anemia can result from inherited disorders, nutritional problems (such as an iron or vitamin deficiency), infections, some kinds of cancer, or exposure to a drug or toxin.

My neighbor's goat dropped dead. I think from septicemia..toxic blood. Have you ever given them NutriCal? I got it from my vet when my cat was sick and very anemic. If you tell me what copper content is too high I will check the tube. Copper can kill them right? It's just a thick paste like toothpaste, and chicken flavored, but I'm sure you could mix it in with food. Anemia can't actually be cured can it? |
