After a great deal of pondering over the rescue horses that I saw a couple of weeks ago I've decided that I'm going to give it a try. Rehab and rescue, that is. I'd been contemplating it anyway after spending a few months with Sunny. There's definitely a need for someone to take on these horses that others have given up on.

First priority would be taking on the BLM horses that have been adopted, but then turned back to the BLM. Transferring them into my name keeps them off the government payroll, so to speak; all their feed/meds and such covered by me and whomever else wanted to contribute.

Second would be those mustangs in extreme need; the ones who have been abandoned, abused, neglected.

I've been working on getting a website off the ground, I'd be delighted if y'all would take a peek and see what you think so far. Suggestions, ideas are welcome. It's a work in progress at this point and I'm still gleaning ideas from everyone on what they think a rescue should be.

No...no...not young. Not anymore! I've got a friend who trims for me but it's danged expensive! I'm thinking of asking if she'd donate a trim per horse, though, when they first come in. Or perhaps even just one per year. Heck, anything helps, right?

I've got the best salve for skin conditions! I made it myself after talking to the vet; it's a tea tree/lavender salve and it blew me away how quickly it worked on Sunny's fungus on her face. Sold it to someone at the market for her dog and she came back the next week and bought more!

Learn to do as much vet care as you can and you'll save a lot of money. Abcesses and shots and skin conditions and...are all stuff you can attend to. I can't pull wolf teeth as it grosses me out but I do know how to. You are young (!! hehehe...) so you can trim but made need the shoer for shoes. I know how to shoe/trim but it's much easier on backs to pay for it!

If you can, give Sunny a hug for me...bless her heart.

Thank you, Corinne! Yes, it's definitely a one at a time thing. Horses are expensive to feed, let alone any hoof/vet care. I've had Sunny here for eight months now and she's still not ready to move on to a new home. Physically she's doing great, but mentally she's just not ready.

Tracey, here in Kuwait we work with an animal shelter called "animals friends league". They rescue cats and dogs from hars treatment or should I say, mistreatment and starvation. their moto is "we save one animal at the time". It is hard to see and not take in any more animal because the shelter is spilling over. So just do whatever you can because it is already more than doing nothing at all. I know how difficult it is sometimes.
They are ways to raise money for your rescue operation, let me know when you plan to have one , I will tell you what we do here to raie money.
good luck, you have a great heart.

Yup, we've got the same laws. I think I'm a 'By Appointment Only' place, lol! Won't be posting any address on the website, and maybe have a PO box.

I decided to go non-profit because people are more apt to make donations that way. Most folks I spoke with said they'd be more comfortable helping if they knew it wasn't run as a biz.

I think your off to a good start with the website! Yep, answering emails PLUS when someone calls, sound civil. I know you will but I've called places only to have the answering party act like I was intruding...that also includes show barns...hehehe...

I've never done a non-profit so don't have any advice there. I just wrote everything off at the end of the year or every quarter, whichever my CPA thought was best. Be sure to keep really good records is about the best thing I can tell you. Also, you might consider carrying an insurance policy too, some sort of umbrella policy for when visitors come on your place. ALSO...(another also) establish hours when you're open. I had people show up at 6:30AM and as late as 11 at nite (they decided to go to the movie first...). Get your signs up that horses are an accident waiting to happen. I'm not sure of WA but in OR there are laws now that protect horse owners from dippy lawsuits in that people are to recognize that horses will hurt you and are 'dangerous'.

Bwaaahaaa!!! A link! A link! Yes, that would be helpful

Folks not answering emails is a pet peeve of mine. I'm seeing horses all over the eastern side of the states listed on Craigslist, no phone number, and they don't respond to emails. One of them has had two mustang offered for a couple of months for $250 each, but no one can ride them as they never bothered to have them trained. I'd love to be able to help, but they don't answer

Tracey, I don't know much about rescue of horses, but I did work with a gazillion dog rescues (breed specific and non breed specific) when I worked at the shelter. Did you provide a link? I didn't see it, and didn't know if it was connected to your carpentercreek blog.

I can help from the perspective of who/what I liked to deal with, and how I felt some orgs went over and above, and some were just really creepy...it's difficult when you "seek" someone out online, to tell who they really are. Shiny websites and all. One of the only things I can tell you that is a really big deal (to me) and may not matter, depending on where you get your horses from to rescue, but answer emails promptly--even if you can't take them in, give an email that simply says, "no". So many times we would be literally, days or minutes away from euthanasia, and I never ever would get a response from a rescue. I usually wrote them off after that, and you'd be surprised how news travels among these rescue folks. Like a bad game of telephone!

Anyway, that's my only thought--is that you answer an email, even if you can't take the rescue in...even if it's a canned answer.
