Last night was the Harvest Moon and what a sight (visit www.larkspurfunnyfarm.blogspot.com for my picture and story). It is breeding time for my goat girls and it is amazing how the moon cycle changes everything here at the farm. You know what they say "Everyone looks better in Moonlight"

Get out there a HOWL

That is a great quote Kate. I agree... the new moon effects my kids that way and no one beleives me. Tonight, the were bouncing off the walls. No more sugar than normal, but they are feisty, and argumentitive, and just a bit hyper. It has to be the moon... it happens way more often around the new moon than not. And you saying that makes me think my kids arn't the only ones that are effected by the lady of the sky. ;) (They are both Cancers too... )

When it is a full moon, I pull my hair out. It affects my daughter. She is almost posessed by an impish spirit and full of mischief. But it is all lighthearted "fun" nothing really bad or naughty.

She settles down (as much as she does for her anyways) after a few days.

Wow Grace- It sounds like you have a lot animals on your property seeking refuge. I hope the Mountain Lion finds his/her niche somewhere safe where it won't hurt anyone so you can get some rest. *hugs*

The numbers are gooing here at the Funny Farm. Last night when I went out to check on everyone before changing into my p.j.'s I found the sweetest little owl siting on the rabbit hutches that I just finished painting. He was still and quite just watching me. I was not sure if he was just wanting to not be noticed or if there was a problem. I walk slowly and talked softly while making my way to the hutchs. He or she remaind still but locking eyes with me. I walk right up to it and with eyes locked we must have spent fifteen minutes just looking deeply into each others eyes. A deep calm, peacefull feeling ran thru me and then I could not help myself I outstretched my hand. Yes, I know better but I just had to. It look at my hand then back into my eyes and without a breath it took off. There are wonderful creatures in the night. Spread your wings even in the night.

Ho boy mountain lions?!? Now that puts a twist into things.

As magestic as they are, I'd be trying to protect my living space too.

We have coyotes, but luckily they aren't brave enough (yet) to come closer to the homestead. I have chickens, a beloved dog and 2 cats

Kind of weird to hear them sound off whenever an Air Force fighter jet passes over. We live in a flight path so every now and again, we get to see some really cool military fighters

Hi Val
Well I went from over two hundred animals to 35 put still since I am an organic farm they can not leave the property. I have no one around her who adherse to the regulations and requirements that my animals live by. Moving the dogs I think helped some put it is funny that the animals who are use to their particular dog where very unhappy to see their own guard dog move. I have been taking short naps but today was spent trying to get some of my fabric stash on my esty site. We have faced preditors before but since our human numbers keep increasing out here they have no where to go. Since also I allow no hunting on my property I think the word is out that "THE FUNNY FARM is SAFE". I even have a chipmunk family that has moved into my front garden and in eleven years we have never had chipmunks. I admit it is the up side of all this. Oh well, I am getting accustomed to my dark circles - lamb and kid watch is just around the corner so I guess I can look at this as a peak of things to come. Safe night all!

How many critters do you have Grace? Would it be a choice to board them somewhere else for a few days... even a week? You need some rest sister!

Last night I moved all the dogs to different spots around the property to keep the mountain lion on it's toes. The wild life deptartment has been traking it but so farm it is smarter then their experts. I contacted a friend of mine who I work with on native herbal medicine and asked what they would recommend. He was very helpful and pointed me in some directions I had completely forgotten. I too would not wish to shot the animal because it is our fault that he has no place to go. All the over building has left our native animals in Colorado without their homes. They have killed 19 Black Bears this summer because they kept coming into towns and the people could not manage their trash. Last night I patrolled with a boat horn because noise is the one thing they fear now. I place my hands, heart and four legged friends in a higher, wiser power and know that we are safe. Mother Earth is making new rules.

Thanks for the sweet words Val. You would not believe what I woke up to at 4:00 am this morning. The dogs were just barking up a storm so I got up looked out the windows and each dog was pointing in different directions so I went downstairs to get the spot light and what did I find sitting next to my shop doors - a cayote. He was frozen with fear. But when I flipped on the outside lights he did not move and the dogs where not barking at him. They were frantic facing the forest. Something in the forest had even scared the cayote. I decided I was not dumb enough to go outside to be eaten. The cayote just looked at me like "I am going to just sit here for awhile and I promise will not bother anyone" Another sleepless night at the Funny Farm and not even the wild things are safe.

Here is the latest update! My dark circles are growing and the dogs have almost lost their voices. Last night the Funny Farm was truly on edge. We have now locals out at night shooting at anything which only goes to really make our fall night deadly. I feel like I am in a bad movie. We have always been surrounded by fools but now they have loaded their shotguns. I ended up calling the police because common scense has gone out the window. There response was as always "Unless they shoot me they are entitled to use their weapons". Two years ago my drunken neighbor was shooting at a traget which was placed in the direction of my largest barn. While my youngest son was out cleaning the pasture with my sheep running around a couple of bullets hit the ground less then a foot away. As he screamed and hit the ground my oldest who was in the next pasture started running toward his brother. I jumped in the truck, tore down the driveway and over to the neighbor where I found him weaving in the driveway with the gun behind his back. He kept yelling at me that he did nothing wrong and he had no gun. As he turned to walk away there was his hand behind his back still with the gun pressed into his hand. When I call the police they stated they could not do anything until one of us was shot. It was not even an offense if they hit one of the animals. I may be the FUNNY FARM but there is a lot of loons out there.

Keep those heads down as we dance by the moon.

oh Grace..do be careful. Sounds like the mountain lion has been stalking around pretty close, especially if all the animals have been on high alert..how scary. I'd hate to have to shoot such a lovely cat as that, but... I understand that sometimes such must be done.If you do manage to encounter the cat..my wish for you is that your aim be true. Best of wishes.

Thanks for all the concern and well wishes - I am very carefull and let my Kasha tell me when I might be getting to close. My shot is not bad but I have been thinking of going to a firing range and brushing up. Most of what I want to do is just make them go away. I also have canned air horn that I have used to scare off prediators. Makes your ears ring for hours but at least I do not have to hurt anyone. Got a new member of the farm - a little chipmuke. He is a tiny thing and I admit it I had to give him something to eat now that the night are getting so cold. The birds are eating like snow is around the corner so I am back to winterizing the farm.

Dance in the MOON tonight.

Now I have more of a reason to be outside in the Moon light. For the past two weeks we have had a mountain lion working about a 10 mile circle around here. Three dogs, a goat and a horse have all been killed. Today I heard another goat lost her life. My oldest and dearest Great Pry "Kasha" has broken two heavy cables to get loose and chace something in my forest late in the night. Last night all I did was stand guard over the farm. Many trips out in the pastures I went to see what had my three pry's up in arms. Even my llamas stood out in the moon light giving their alarm call. The wild things where out and no rest for the funny farm. As I stood in the moon light with rifle in hand I had to start laughing because if someone told me when I was in college that I would be standing alone in the middle of the night to face down a mountain lion I would have told them they were crazy. In eleven years we have only lost one lamb to a badger - which I might add cost me four broken toes, lose of my big toe toenail, two chipped teeth and more bruses then I wish to remember but that is a whole other story. I am not going to have any four legged friend of mine be dinner, so I guess we will be howling at the moon again tonight. Both Kasha and I took a nap so we will be fresh and alert.

So keep those friends close as we howl tonight.

I love being outside on the full moon late at night! I like being outside after dark with my animal friends anyway, but on the full moon they all just seem more silly and fun. Sometimes I just stand by the gate and visit with Mona while I watch the sheep or hens. They are out in their yard late alot more if the moon is full. I would be too, if I were a hen!!

Grace, loved your story....... I walked up the moonlit hillside tonight.. all the trees have pretty much turned, it's a golden site now. Snow is only a breath away, and Bella is healing quickly. Stitches out and she spends most of her time tightly next to me. Oh how I love my little dog, your sweet goat. What a tender story, there is a soul in all of our creatures. jo

Greetings,

I am a new goat "Mom" and we are doing pretty well. I have worked with them and can now take them out on leads to graze. Until we have some fences up this is the way we have to do it. So we take a stroll each morning and evening to graze, lol. I think I am doing well but wonder if there is any place I can go to make sure I am doing things as they should be. One concern I have right now is making sure I am cleaning things properly.

Thanks so much, Barbara

I took some pictures of last night's full moon because it was SO beautiful. Still a little bit light with a few trailing thin clouds across the face--But--they look like a white spot in a dark picture. But it was beautiful and the coyotes howled all night. So i howled back at them. MB

Funny you should mention the goats and full moon. I live on the edge of the boonies in north Idaho and was out with a lap blankie and a cup of hot tea, enjoying the moon and the frogs and starlight on my creek side deck and I could hear the neighbor's Boer billy making all kinds of "chuckling" breeding noises LOL! By the sound of it we are going to have a LOT of babies in a few months
