The term is used lightly, as these folks are horse traders, not rescuers. Its the Columbia Basin Equine Rescue. I've no clue if they started out legit or not, but they certainly aren't what they put themselves out to be.

In any case, there are two BLM mustangs there, and you know I have a heart for the wild ones. The thing is, each time you 'adopt' from places like this, they go out and buy two more horses to turn around and sell. This particular place has had several horses die and there are pics of horses who looked healthy when they came but ended up thin when they left.

So I hate to support them, but I hate to leave animals there with them at the same time, especially my wild ones. How does one deal with situations like this?

Winona, I saw that pic of the kids on the weanling. Horrible. Just horrible. There's a lady here in our county who's always got some sob story about why she's got to sell her horses/ponies (I think she's divorced the same guy 12 times in the last three months), and she lets her kids sit double on babies. And not even horses...pony babies!

I'm seeing that the mustangs aren't listed at the CBER website any longer. I contacted the BLM in hopes a volunteer in that area could check to see where the horses were, plus sent them the fugly link that had pics of the old Sleepy Hollow location so they could see just what they were dealing with.

Going non-profit means people can deduct their donations. As a business, people don't tend to want to help out so readily; especially other businesses. Not that there's a ton of money in horses, unless you're trading and turning them over like some rescues do. And while there's nothing shameful in having some cash in the bank for emergency funds, when those funds aren't there when the emergency arises things don't look so good (which is whats been happening at cber.)

Tracey, the mustang makeover that Western Horseman is sponsoring

Yes, that's the same Makeover. From what I understand, they'll be doubling the amount of horses next year and will be increasing the prize money to $75,000. I doubt I've got what it takes to be in the money, but it'd be a terrific experience to be involved in, eh?

Tracey, the mustang makeover that Western Horseman is sponsoring (well, I think WH is sponsoring, I don't have my mag in front of me)?? I read all the stories and thought of you! You really should as you love the varmints like your own kids! I'll root for you!

Ok, back to the post...hehehe...when I rescued horses, I did it as a biz and wrote everything off at the end of the year and it was fine. I did all my own vet work, except surgery or bleeding I couldn't stop or pulling wolf teeth (gross to the max) and did all the trimming altho I prefer to pay as it's easier on my back. I'm still not sure why being non-profit is so great. I also used an accountant as I'm not tax smart. He said that it would be better to do it as a biz and take the write off then no one could question or cause probs, excpet for the IRS. Seems like non-profits always have someone looking over your shoulder nowadays.

As an aside, there is a story on another board of a 'non-profit' where the owners kids are sitting on a WEANLING's back and some shady postings. Obviously not much horse knowledge there and folks are thinking it's just a way to have a horse and not have to ante up for upkeep.

Tracey - your heart is definately in the right place. Look carefully at the requirements for the 501(c)3 not-for-profit status. I think there might be a requirement for a governing board with officers, meetings, etc. Of course, you can fudge on that a little, I'm sure -- you're the President, DH is Treasurer, etc. But there might be some push-back if a majority of the funding comes through you and there are no other outside investors or contributors.

My horse stayed at a "retirement" farm that had set up as a not-for-profit and their accountant kept warning them that they needed more outside funding and less personal investment or their status would be in jeopardy.

Always good to go in with your eyes open!

I've learned that it takes as much time and energy to wish as it does to plan.

Heh...yeah, right. I do, actually. I just don't have feed for one more. Plus, I'm dying to try out for that mustang makeover next year. Don't know if I'll make it, but if I do, I need a stall

But...I think I can still squeeze her in. Think they'd be willing to trade for soap or yarn???

I don't know, Winona, if that's the place or not. I've never been, nor have I got an address.

I called there saying I'd heard there were a couple of mustangs. He answered very quick that no, there weren't. I was a bit confused, so he asked "Do you mean the BLM mustangs?", and I said yes, and he said he didn't have them any more. So I asked where I might find them; he laughed and said he didn't remember where he sent them, either on the truck or with the rescue girls. Then he said yea, the rescue girls had them.

From what I understand of the rescue, they don't pick up the horses until they've got a home, so if the website says Pending (which it does), the horses still ought to be there.

Anyway, someone in that area said they'd try to get their neighbor over there today to check for me and see if the horses are there or gone. I already notified the BLM; they told me they'd heard positive things about the rescue from folk who'd adopted mustangs from them. I told them I've spoken to four mustang owners since finding the horses listed there earlier this week who've had such poor experience that they won't deal with them again; one of those is a BLM volunteer. I just don't think you can come up with that many negative stories within a few days without there being a problem. I'd never even heard of the rescue before!

Anyway, I want to get one of the horses if at all possible. Here's a link with her pics: http://www.columbiabasinequinerescue.org/DEF-HorsesProfile.asp?HoID=925
Her name is Forgotten...is that a story book waiting to happen, or what?

Hey, I think I know the place. It's on the interstate?? If so, it is a nice place, not junky looking. I've checked those horses all along and they aren't bad at all from what I've seen. If he had truck parking, I've thought of stopping in too. Oh well.

Yeah, I saw the fugly link yesterday, too.

Winona, the horses are actually at a horse trader's place near Yakima. I got his number yesterday. His facility is stellar, from what I hear. A place that most of us only dream of having. Nice pipe corrals, good footing, etc. CBER lists the horses on their website before even picking them up from this guy, and it's probably a good thing, given the conditions that were shown in that photograph.

I was going to mention fugly horse but junkjunkie beat me to it! I have talked to a lady at Columbia Basin, I think her name was Wendy, in the past but they didn't have their 501 thingy yet and so didn't do anything about it. I wondered why their vet work was so expensive since I think rescues should know how to handle almost everything.

Actually, I go thru Yakima about twice a month...I 'wonder' if I could 'happen' to stop by their place and see for myself...just wondering, y'know??...

I got the phone number for the lot today and will give them a call tomorrow...well, at least I hope to. I'd love to just pull the two of them off and bring them home, but I'm a long way from Yakima. I called a friend who's also a volunteer with the BLM; maybe between the two of us we can pick them up. I'm beyond tight financially this month, though, so don't know if we can make it happen.

I'm going to look into going non-profit so I don't have to worry about asking for donations. It's not just the cost of picking the girls up from the lot (paying the lot owner plus transportation), but the cost of upkeep. Sounds like both mares were used on a dude ranch, so hopefully they're well broke and would be easy enough to place in a home.

People like this just make me so angry. I don't have horses but we did lots of research because my dd wanted one. I am truly amazed how many horses end up being neglected and end up on the feed lot or at a rescue. And then for the rescue to turn out to be horse traders!! They should be tarred and feathered. Keep us posted on the what's going on.

Boy howdy, Patricia, you aren't just a kidding about the sweet lips on those boys (and girls!)

Anyway, I've found that these horses are on the Yakima feed lot, and the info that CBER lists is only what the owners leave with the feed lot. You can also purchase directly from the feed lot and bypass this 'rescue'. So I may just have to look into it a bit more. Big problem there is that these horses (at the rescue) have been suffering from strangles, no doubt originating at the feed lot. A quarantine would be necessary for any coming off and I've not got anyplace that's far enough from my own or my neighbor's horses.

Please let me know when you find out how to deal with places like this one. We purchased two horses from a horse trader and let me tell you they are quite the, shall I just say sweet talkers. Horses are such majestic animals I cannot understand why some people can mistreat them so? Anyhow enough rambling. Please keep me posted if something can be done to close places like this down. Thank you for posting....patricia
