this is one of our cows favorite treat in the fall. I get a kick out of them reaching for them. The other pictures on the photo bucket site, are.... The newest section of barn yard fence. (clean up not done yet, been too hot)
and an example of Bovine Bonsi. We saw a Bonsi exhibit at the Chicago Botanical Gardens, with ddmashayekhi, and I told her I had great examples of this at home!! Farm style

Posted - Sep 07 2007 : 12:47:48 PM Jane, your story reminds me of my own experience as a kid with our landlords cows. I can remember eating my lunch when I was really young and suddenly noticing a cow or two staring at me through the kitchen window! The cows were always escaping from their pasture and for some odd reason they would surround our house. It was like something from a Gary Larson, "Farside" cartoon.

Posted - Sep 07 2007 : 10:44:17 AM Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful photo. It would be great as wallpaper on your computer! One of our neighbors has been having quite the time with his cows getting out and roaming. Evidently the deer take down a piece of fencing and then the cows follow! Anyway, it is quite the sight to walk out early and see them roaming around someone's yard, eating apples from under the trees, drinking the bird bath water...and then when you yell for them to get back, some go, but one hid behind the neighbors sauna the other day!!! I laughed so hard, because when the farmer came to round them up, it just peeked around and then mosied along at its own pace!!! They also like to hide in the morning fog, or mist!!! Whoever thinks cows are dumb, well, they just haven't been around cows!!! With laughter, peapodjane |

Posted - Sep 07 2007 : 06:55:28 AM When I was a kid we had apple trees (2) in our side pasture. My dad would put up a temporary fence when the apples were ripe to keep our cow from eating all of them. She would lean way over the fence, stretch her neck as far as it could go and then the longest tongue would come out and grab the closest apple. It was the funniest thing to watch.

It has been windy here and alot of apples have fallen on the ground so the kids gather up new ones every day for her and the sheep..they wait by the gate everytime someone is out there now!

Posted - Sep 06 2007 : 08:41:55 AM Wow, what great pictures! I love the cow stretching up for an apple. The new fence section looks very good, I can see you have had a busy summer. Looks like you'll be able to have a great bonfire this fall. You can roast those Windy Pines wieners! The bonsai apple tree looks like it was trimmed up by a pro. Those cows have a new career, beats being beef in a freezer!
