I went out this morning to feed and found my little horse Jack completely swollen from his eyes to his mouth. He was having a really hard time breathing and he was bleeding from his nose and eyes. We got him to the vet, and she started him on anti venom, steroids and fluids. Just the anti venom shot was $500.00. Please keep my little Jackie in your thoughts and prayers. His name is One Eyed Jack, because he lost his eye as a baby, so this has made him temporarily blind. I hate leaving him at the vet, but he'll need to stay there a few days. The vet said the rest of the afternoon and evening will be critical for him, so please remember him. Thanks, Lu

So happy to know your little horse is well and safe.

I lived in the desert for 5 years and know all too well about those pesky rattlers!

We had a few snake bites on the gazelles a the zoo, but never on their faces. When this happens it's always worse.

Thankfully here in the south rattlesnakes are a bit less common, however copperhead bites are still scary!

Jackie is home!! He's still pretty swollen, but much improved. His good eye is almost fully open, but still weepy. As soon as he got in the corral, he and his donkey friend started running and kicking up their heels! It was great to see them so happy. Jack got pretty winded, but now he's eating, well like a horse, so all is well. He has to have pennicillen (sp?) shots 2 times a day for 10 days too. I'm off to go check on him again, so thanks everyone for your prayers and for caring so much about my little guy. I'll try to post a picture so you can all see him. Love and hugs, Lu

Im soooo glad he is getting better, I just hate it when they get hurt and they cant talk to ya.
Im sure glad I live where there are no poison snakes.

But there is a little gardener snake living out in my garden area, I see her tail slithering off every once in a while. dont like her even if she is eating bad bugs.

Little Jackie has turned the corner and is on the home stretch towards home!! He is eating like a pig and breathing much better. His overall swelling hasn't improved all that much, but he seems more comfortable. The vet thinks he might get to come in 2 to 3 days. It's really hard to watch him eat since his little mouth is so swollen internally too, but he takes his time and gets the job done. The vet speculates that he was bitten during the prior evening and was at the 12 hour mark when I found him. That's why he is in such bad shape, and he's so little. Any hoo, I'm thrilled that he's doing better, and I'll keep you posted. Thanks again! Love, Lu
P.S. When I visited him yesterday, there were 2 other horses there that had been bitten by rattlers over the weekend! Yikes!

Oh! I'm soooo happy for the littl thing. I've been so upset thinking about him--the bleeding part just broke my heart. Such a sweet little life to have already suffered so!
Keep us posted as to his recovery!!!

Oh Lu!

That is great! I hope he continues to work the poison out of his system! I am sure he is feeling much better now that he has some sight back!

Good Vet news this AM. Jackie is slightly improved. His good eye is a little less swollen so he can most likely have a little vision out of it, so that has to help him at least feel less frightened. His muzzle is still swollen, but they haven't needed to put shunts in his nostrils, so hopefully that will improve today as well. Thanks girls for all your prayers and good wishes, it's really a comfort to know that someone else is rooting for my little guy. I'll keep you all posted on his progress. Love and hugs, Lu

Oh, Luanne, my prayers are with you. When I was staying temporarily with my sister who lives 25 miles outside San Diego in the hills, 3 of our collective 4 dogs got bit by a rattler. Healing light for your wee Jackie! Hugs, Judy

The vet just called and Jackie is no better but not worse either, so I'm taking that as a positive. Guess the meds will take time to kick in? Thanks for caring, it helps a lot. Lu

Oh, that's terrible! I will keep you and Jack in my prayers. I have mini horses myself, so I know how much they are like big kids. I'm glad you found him and hopefully the treatment is successful.
