Sherri- you are now not the only one. I have a litter of four Shih Tzu puppies and one of them wasn't walking around. She just kept looking at her foot. I picked her up and looked at it and saw a bunch of holes with maggotty things crawling inside. They were eating her foot. I called the vet and he told me to use flea shampoo and water and try to get them all out. He also told me to check the other puppies. I did and they all have some holes. I got some maggots out of some of them, but others I didn't. None of them have them as bad as the one with the bad foot. She needs antibiotics tomorrow and one of the other ones has a pretty big bump so he may too. The vet said they have some stuff to pour in the holes to make the maggots come out. This is the grossest thing ever!

Yeah- but you really needed some vet assistance! And they know what they are signing up for when they become vets! :)

I have never had this happen before and I have been raising puppies for 6 years. It must be the heat and humidity. I have a really great vet. My vet I had for years and loved moved away and I didn't like the new guy. When my dog got hit on the road a few weeks ago, it took my regular vet an hour to call back. I called this other vet, the one I am using now and he was at his clinic a minute after I got there. Needless to say, I found a new vet the hard way. Anyway, last night after I discovered the maggots, I called him (at midnight) he not only answered the phone, but was really nice and told me what to do. I am very happy with him. I feel so bad about calling so late, though.

So sorry to have started something!! I wonder if they are particularly bad this summer or what? Sounds at least like your vets on top of things - not like the new guy I got when we moved to this town. I was really disapopinted in him. Hope your pups doing better soon. I feel your pain!

EEWWW! Oh my gosh! Now I have yet another thing to check Sky for! During the summer months I almost compulsively check her for ticks and such because they gross me out! LOL

I have a friend who had this happen to a pet rabbit, the vet said it is common on older pets who no longer groom themselves well. Poor puppies!!!! Hope you get it cleared up soon.
Hugs, Kathy

Did the vet say what causes this to happen? Or anything else about it
