Posted - Jul 17 2007 : 08:30:18 AM I gave in last week Wednesday and picked up a new duckling. He is a little Khaki Campbell. His name is Jake the Drake... so I hope he is a boy! He seems to be very imprinted as of right now. He follows me clear through the whole house. He sleeps through the night, for the most part and noises don't seem to alarm him too much. Hopefully he won't be as noisy.

Posted - Jul 17 2007 : 2:36:58 PM Congratulations on your new Ball of Fluff! He is darling. . . I don't know of anyone personally who raises ducks (my sister-in-law keeps one, but doesn't sell them or anything) but every once in a while I will come across an add for ducks on Craigslist, either in the pets section or the farm and garden section. When you are ready to add another, you could try checking there every week or so, you might get lucky! Also, if you have a feed store near you, they usually have a bulletin board with adds and sometimes I see ducks there. Good luck!

Posted - Jul 17 2007 : 09:48:21 AM I have tried baking muffins with the duck eggs... but my oven is broken (won't keep a consistent temp) and I have not gotten it fixed. Plus who wants to slave over a hot oven when it's already blazing hot out??
I was pretty much stuck with just getting one. He was the last one left. I suppose I could have waited until it cooled off this fall, but maybe I wasn't thinking. Could I add a buddy once he is older, or do you think that would cause squabling? Are there any AZ farmgirls out there that have ducklings/started ducks that sell them?

Posted - Jul 17 2007 : 09:36:36 AM Congrats on your new baby!!! He is just precious!!I just LOVE ducks and have 9. One Peking named Pippin (Pip) and some Runners. She mated with a Mallard and had babies 2 years ago. My son calls them Runnards! They lay a lot of eggs, which I only use to bake with. They make the most wonderful baked goods, really light and fluffy. I've been thinking about you and Duck Duck everyday, cause that's how I call my ducks when it's bedtime. I just say "Duck Duck Gooses" and they come running to get their treats! So cute! But at the same time, my heart was just breaking for you. So, I'm so happy that you have a new little duck friend. Have you thought about getting him a little companion? Our feed store only sells them in pairs cause they said that they can die of loneliness. I'm not sure if it's just a tactic to sell more ducks, or if it's true, but thought I'd pass it along. You probably know more about this than I do. So give Jake a kiss for me, he is such a sweetie pie! Can't wait to hear about his first swim too! Big hugs, Lu

Posted - Jul 17 2007 : 09:08:36 AM Haha what farm? I live in a regular neighborhood! I do wish I had land but that will have to wait a while. I never used my old duck's eggs. I usually just put them down the disposal because I was wary about selling them or giving them to neighbors. I was not sure if they were safe enough to share. Does anyone know how to tell? They were always nice sized, clean and bright white, hard. The yokes were large and bright yellow and the whites were clear.
I am hoping Jake is a drake because I have no use for the eggs at the moment, especially since Campbells are profuse layers. I would hate to have another calcium problem if Jake is actually a hen.
