What did you use as the flooring? Do you have any companys you recomend and last but not least what was the cost about. thanks so much. I love this forum, you are all so talented and down to earth. I will try to post more. We need to get this project started soon.

Posted - Jul 13 2007 : 11:30:01 PM Building a barn is expensive, you're in Illinois, check the ads for the local chain building stores. Menards offers kit barns, you can build yourself or hire contractor, their web site offers various plans, material lists, etc., and in-store kiosks give same. I'd imagine the other big stores do as well.
There are also portable horse shelters that you could use for different things/animals. And you can move from pasture to pasture, so you only need one. :) |

Posted - Jul 13 2007 : 04:50:12 AM We built the barn ourselves. From start to well, it is not done yet, but one day. This was I suppose 10 or more years ago now. Time flies. Lucky both of us could handle the heights, not that we would do it any more, but at the time it was okay. So with the increases in the price of steel, I am sure it would be alot higher now. Posted - Jul 12 2007 : 4:22:13 PM We need a loafing shed or row shed-style barn and hubby has been investigating those metal carports for less than $800. (We'll add sides later.) I'm not crazy about the idea but he's worried about wind shear...

Posted - Jul 12 2007 : 4:19:10 PM My husband and I are also looking to build a barn soon. Not sure the way to go, as we are a bit short on funds and are trying to stay out of debt as much as possible. Does anyone else have suggestions?

Posted - Jul 11 2007 : 05:28:16 AM Cathie- we built our own barn-40x72, with a hay mow. I think it is about 35 feet high. We used steel posts and beams for the bottom part of the barn. Also concrete (can't think of the right term) supports under the ground. I think there was about 10,000 in cost under ground, and then another 40 above ground. We built our own trusses. We used steel for the roof and sides. We can get about 5000 bales in the hay mow. Still has dirt floor though. But we do have 12x12 pens inside, with an alley way through the middle. Hope that gives you some idea. Michele Here is a picture of the barn, not the best but gives you some idea.
