Hi farmgirls,

We've just recently gotten a few animals at the fort for the summer to illustrate the large farm that used to be a part of the site. A dexter heifer, 4 Boer goats (mum and triplets), and an irascable old American Turkey have joined our team!

However, good old Tom has turned into an escape artist. All the animals live in a pen and Tom happily stays in there and shows off all day, but after we leave he always makes a break for it and we find him the next morning wandering around the rest of the site. None of us are expert turkey wranglers, so it takes us abit to get him back in his pen and clean up after him, can't have visitors stepping in.. well, you know.

Is there any way to get him to stay in the pen? Can we break him of this escaping habit? Or do we have to lock him up in his little cage every night to stop his escapades for good?

Any and all turkey advice welcome!

Lol Kelly! That is what we threaten him with - a nice slow roasted dinner. However, he doesn't seem to listen very well and bites fingers instead.

He is fed very well by all the visitors and us during the day but it may be that the current pen is too small for him. However, he didn't break out last night! So perhaps he is starting to calm down and stay put.

Maybe he needs a roost in his pen.

He may be searching for a place to sleep at night and he's awake before you get there in the morning.

I have no turkey experience, but does he go searching for food or exercise maybe?
