hey there gals.. hubby brought home a wee racoon. (size of a kitten)He found the little critter in the barnyard in some manure. My hubby heard pittiful cries and there the little raccoon was. anyway, when my husband cleaned him off, he noticed a gash on the poor little things neck. no blood, just a cut about 1 inch long and right to the muscle. Now hubby has decided that we shoud help this little guy out (we named him Gus) Gus is drinking lots of milk and is quite actiive. Only concern is his neck. It doesn't seem to bother him any, but it is starting to have an odor. Possibly infected? Any home remedies? thanks

Sorry bout that. Have you read the book Rascal by Sterling North? One of my favorites.

Melanie, You and your husband did a wonderful thing for that precious little baby raccoon. He could have laid in the field and died alone, instead your DH brought him home to his family to be nurtured and cared for. Bless all you.

thanks Gals. I miss him. Sometimes I think I can hear him and his little squeaks. But Alee you are right, he sure did have a loving home during his last days. Thanks again

I'm so sorry to hear about Gus! At least he had a loving home during his last few days!

aww I had a feeling he had died even before I read this post. sorry to hear that, but he must have had something internal going on too.
it's odd that just the other night we had a raccoon visitor into our city yard and I mentioned to my husband that one of the farm girls husbands had found a baby raccoon.anyhow..sorry that the little guy didn't make it.

Hey gals
thanks for all of the tips......wee little Gus died in my arms Sunday night. He kind of moaned and closed his eyes and that was it. I miss him, but at least he didn't die alone and we did all that we could.

I hope he gets better! Are you thinking of keeping him as a pet? He might need to go to the vet to be looked over, but I also know that sometimes that is just not an option for a wild animal. Some humane societies also do wild animal rescue too.

Melanie, how's your baby doing?

Like you, I'd probably try to save it. But one word of caution: Racoons carry loads of parasites that are dangerous and even lethal to humans, especially small children. So please be extremely careful.

If he's acting depressed and listless and off feed, I'd wonder if he didn't have other injuries such as internal ones.

Melanie,
Good advice all around, but wanted to say the peroxide is good. For the first or second cleaning, however in humans it will actully retard the healing process. By killing off the natural backteria that would otherwise help fight the infection. Not sure about this in animals though. Good luck!!! Kristy

thanks for the tips. i got some peroxide and used that. It didn't seem to hurt him any. We noticed a big change in him today. He is not very "talkative" and is quite sleepy. Hasn't ate much today. Poor little thing. we have penicillin here for the big animals that may need it. Hubby decided to give Gus a wee dose of it via needle under hte skin. Not sure if it will help or hurt. Gus seems to be comfortable and who knows, he may come around. Our fingers are crossed!!

Peroxide will work. If you have access to some, some antibiotics from the vet, but wait until after you clean the cut - it may not be necessary.

I have raised raccoons before and a bit of advice - when you go to clean out his gash, wear THICK leather gloves and long pants. The reason being that if the swab or the peroxide hurts (which it will), he will bite or scratch you on the legs as he tries to flee. And their bite hurts!

Not all but some raccoons carry rabies, so you might want to check in your area (discreetly of course, without disclosing that you have one, or animal control may take him away...) In many areas, it is illegal to keep one as a pet. I'm not sure about where you live.

When they are young, they make very cute pets, but build a cage for them when they get older, or plan on releasing him into the wild. The males get big and can get mean when they mature, esp. in mating season.

perhaps a betadyne swab on it after cleaning out with peroxide would be helpful. Also neosporin or a antibiotic type ointment would be helpful..ya know just what we'd use to keep the ick out.
hope the lil guy/gal does well. we had a pet raccoon once..so fun. they like fruits that are just slightly ripe.moistened dogfood or cat food.
you can even give them some baby kitty formula milk ask your vet for the recipe/most vets offices can you tell you how to mix up a baby bunny/baby kitten formula that works well for abandoned baby critters(the canned evaporated milk with caro syrup, egg type thing) in a baby bottle and they will hold the bottle with their feet and drink it.
good luck.

I guess I would try to clean the cut like I would on myself, with peroxide. Maybe antibiotic ointment. Hope he gets better. MIchele
