I noticed that butter churns are horribly expensive. One sight had an electric butter churn with paddles and I realized that it was basically the same as my ice-cream maker! I bought it at Wal-Mart for about $20. It has a huge pink tub a singular large paddle and a motor that sits on top to turn the paddle. I think it could hold at least 2 gallons!

Do you think this would churn fast enough? The brand is Rival, by the way.

Thanks for the sites, Alee. This is going to be my first attempt to make goats butter. Will let you all know how it turns out.

Oh, Jersey butter! We used to churn Jersey butter by hand when I was a girl. My great grandmother had a beautiful gallon jar with metal churn attachment on the top. It was sooo good... I'm lactose-intolerant now, but what I wouldn't give for some fresh Jersey butter on home baked bread. :-)

We have a couple hand crank Daizey's and one electric churn. The electric churn turns pretty slow and we can usually make the butter come a lot faster using on of the Daizeys.

mmm! Goats milk butter sounds yummy! I have heard that it can be slightly difficult to make though. I found a few links online for you (or anyone) if you are interested.

Thanks for the advice. As you know, I have 2 dairy goats that I'm milking. They each give a quart apiece twice a day. Hello, I have milk coming out my ears.lol I'm going to try my hand at making goats milk butter at the end of this week. Can't wait to see how the ice cream maker does. Might be something for me to look into as how I'm on a very strict budget now.

I occasionally end up with a surplus of cream (we buy it when it's on sale) and I love homemade butter. I use my hand-held mixer and just keep going after the cream turns to whipped cream. I don't "churn" a lot of butter though, but have found the hand-held blender does a decent job with small amounts (less than a quart) of cream.

We used the shaking a jar method...goes faster with 4 kids shaking jars...for a long time until I got a butter churn (hand cranked) from a dear friend for my birthday last fall..wow..what a difference!
Alee...you pretty much don't churn fast..but then I have never used an electric one..maybe they do go faster. I know someone who uses her Bosch mixer and says it works great. I have never tried that. I would sure try the ice cream maker...if it didn't work you would at least have whipped cream..and THAT is a good thing!

For a super inexpensive butter churn try a quart mason jar. Fill the jar about 1/2 full, screw the lid on and rock end to end.

Hi Mary Jane-

Thanks for the info. Someday when I have a dairy cow I will keep it in mind! I would LOVE to have one, but I think my neighbors and my landlord would have a small problem with a backyard cow

Alee, you can use the ice cream maker, just might have to churn a little while longer. I use a one gallon glass jar, and shake. It only takes me about half an hour, but I also use Jersey cream (very rich).
I would give it a try, and before you know it.....you will be taking orders for fresh made butter....
Let us know how it turns out....

The hand crank ones were over $100 at Lehmans and I got my ice cream maker fo $20 at Wal-Mart. I just don't have any butter making experience so I am not sure if you have to churn fast or if you just have to churn longer if you churn slow?

You can also check Lehmans for theirs. I don't know what the price is now but last I checked they were reasonable -- for the hand crank ones. (Lehmans makes and sells supplies for Amish and Mennonite families. (http://www.lehmans.com/jump.jsp?itemID=0&itemType=HOME_PAGE)

You would just have to give it a try and see. I don't know how fast motorized churns turn, but I churn at varing speeds. Useally makes me sleepy!! :) Michele
