Posted - May 18 2007 : 10:37:25 PM They aren't exactly "Barnyard Buddies," but did any of you just LOVE what we call "water 'skeeters" when you were little? It took me...um...30 years to realize that the "'skeeters" part was a way to say "mosquitoes." I realy, truly thought it was because they sort of "skeet" around on the water.
Anyway, today I was out feeding the sheep and there was irrigation water in the ditch - my little boy was absolutely FASCINATED by the water 'skeeters - I had to tear him away. I was wondering if any of you have these funny little creatures around, too...

Posted - May 19 2007 : 8:08:26 PM Nah - I don't think they have anything to do with "real" mosquitos - they are just what we called them. I can imagine that they aren't that fun in a swimming pool, but just today, when we were looking at them (again) in the canal, my little one was asking if we couldn't just take a FEW home -- they could live in the bathtub, or the kitchen sink... Big ideas from a little boy!!!

Posted - May 19 2007 : 09:25:56 AM We called them Water Skaters in my home town. Are they a relative of the mosquito? I loved to watch them and try to catch them (of course I never was able to...they are fast!) I love how they just skate across the surface tension of the water!
