*sigh*

It's the middle of the night and I just got back from taking my baby Charlie (my "special" cat buddy) to the emergency vet clinic. Apparently he got hit by a car and his jaw is fractured in at least one major spot, maybe with multiple fractures. It's in the wrong place on his face now. His nose and face are torn up. There's blood everywhere and it's really bad. The vets are x-raying him this evening to see if there are other injuries and watching to make sure he doesn't go into shock.

Provided he makes it through this evening, we'll have to go pick him back up at daybreak and transfer him to regular vet office, to see if anyone there can do the reconstructive surgeries on his jaw. At the very best, it'll be weeks before he can eat solid foods, and even longer before they will unwire his jaws.

Leaving him there was the hardest thing I have ever done. Poor Charlie is my "special" kitty - He's only partially tame, even with me. DH is only tolerated under certain conditions. Top that with the whole trauma of it all, and Charlie is NOT having a good night. His wails as I left will haunt me for months...

Please say a little kittie prayer for Charlie and me.

Erin, I just saw this... and my heart stopped when I read the first post. I'm so very happy for Charlie's improvement! What a great recovery story, and I also think he'll be very close to you as a result of this time of suffering. I'll be praying for you and your boy,
Ann

I'm so glad to hear he's back with you at home. Vets can be so distressing, especially on feral kitties. He's a special boy! I bet he'll get REAL used to being inside before too long :)

TODAY'S UPDATE:

Charlie is doing MUCH MUCH BETTER today. He didn't like being fed by syringe, so he made a deal with me - he'll eat the food himself, if I'll keep that syringe away from him... He's still not wanting water, but I've been sneaking it into his wet food, so he IS getting it. The vet says he doesn't have to come back for a couple of weeks, and he no longer needs an IV. Yippee!

It's raining outside (again) so I have him set up with a bed by the window so he can watch what's going on outside. His brother Harley and sister Ginger have been stopping by periodically to check on him but for now, he's sleeping. He's been sneaking outside every chance he gets, so I think he is feeling A LOT better. He's been told he has to stay inside, but that I will let him sleep as long as he wants, wherever he wants, as long as it is INSIDE.

Charlie had to go back to the vet this morning for another round of IVs.

But he's back home again tonight and I've been instructed to feed him by syringe or eye dropper. The vet sent home some food and syringes and I also picked up some fancy catfood that I hoped would appeal to him. Some with lots of broth in it.

He's taking the broth by eye dropper, and some water, but not on his own. But he's getting some nutrients and fluids, which is the most important thing. He's not yet interested in solid foods but it is a huge improvement over yesterday.

And Charlie looks a LOT better, even with his new crooked grin.

Could be all the meds and stuff, you know. And, sometimes, when they feel terrible they just don't eat or drink.

Glad that the vet is so intune with him! Keep us posted!

Charlie's back at the vet's today but only because he needed to be hooked up to an IV for fluids. He's not drinking. We'll pick him up in a couple of hours.

Charlie is home now and VERY HAPPY to be home. He needs to go to sleep but he's so grateful to be home from the vet's that he can't hold still. He's purring pretty loudly too for someone with a wire sticking out of his chin. Looks like his smile might be a crooked one...

He has to go back in the morning, but for tonight, he'll get to stay here. We'll see how he does. Thank you again for all your prayers.

[Charlie's not really too feral anymore - he is fairly tame with me but still really skittish around others. I've been working with him for two years. I think he was in too much pain to care much who messed with him.]

Now that he's home, he's not letting me out of his sight - and he wants to be lying on my arms. kind of hard to type this way...LOL.

Said a prayer for Charlie and you. When one of ours is sick or injured it really scares us. Here's praying Charlie is as good as new...real soon. Susan

Well, he'll have a bit of a road to recovery, but it's better than what we thought, right? Perfect cat faces are lovely ( I saw his photo, and he's a beauty), but now he'll have some character and be even more special to you.

I hope he comes home soon, as I know that vet stay will be rough on him, being a feral guy.

Update on Charlie - He's at the second vet's office now and is awake and alert (although in lots of pain and totally scared to death.) The vet says that his jaw fracture is one of the easier ones to wire, so that's a relief. There's still a risk with surgery (as always) but it looks like he'll be okay. He may even be done and ready to come home this evening.

The wiring is not like humans where their entire jaw is wired shut and they have to eat through a straw. (Thank goodness!) So he should be able to drink and eat soft foods without having to be fed through an IV or an eye dropper.

Thank you for all your prayers. I have a picture of Charlie up on my blog if anyone wants to see him (pre-accident).

I sure do understand. My heart is aching for you both. Cats really do have nine lives, though, and I've seen some miracles (I have 2 that are especially clumsy).

You're both in my thoughts!
