and couldn't get there!!  I had to watch the Kentucky Derby on the telly!! Well, at least I could say I've been close but no cigar...hehehe... I thought it was a really good race.

A few years back we took a vacation to Lexington-my suggestion, not the family's, but they humored me. I got up very early to visit the Keeneland race track and watch the morning workouts. It was a misty kind of day with a heavy fog settled in over the track. In the beginning, you could only hear faint hoofbeats. Gradually, the sounds got heavier and heavier until you could not only hear it, but you could feel it in your heart. Then, suddenly, this beautiful horse would break through the fog and come racing past. It absolutely takes your breath away!
I'm not a huge fan of thoroughbred racing but I can't help but admire the athleticism and the beauty of these animals. I shed a couple of quiet tears and sent best wishes toward heaven for Barbaro this weekend.
I've learned that it takes as much time and energy to wish as it does to plan.

Polly - You're sure right about the run down aspect of the area. But recently(past few years), Churchill has been buying up lots of the old, run down houses nearby and landscaping to give the area a softer, greener(sort of like the green field you imagined) look. The bad news(for me, at least) is the new/building/renovation they did to the track itself at the same time. You can only see the original 'twin spires' if you look really, really hard and squint your eyes the right way. I liked the old fashioned look much better! I can remember when there were wicker fainting couches in the 'waiting area' in the women's restrooms! LOL

Ohhh, I so could not watch any of the Barbaro stuff! I'd seen that clip of him running and the jockey struggling to pull him up, that foot just flopping, it makes me want to hurl. Too close to home for me. |

I visited Churchill Downs a few years back and was surpised as heck to see it in the middle of a sort of run down campus area of the city. I always pictured it out in the middle of a green field somewhere!

One time in the middle of a roll of my film that got developed there were a bunch of pics of Derby Day. Somebody at the photo processing must have goofed but we ended up with many pictures of a woman and man all decked out in their finery and bestowing some horse(?) with laurels and garlands of flowers!! Must have been my paternal grandfather trying to get me to the Derby one way or another! Both times he had a horse run we were unable to be there...boo! But I have had my mint juleps! Winona, maybe next time you'll get the big hat and see the race!(Actually, you probably saw more on tv than if you had been inside!)

That's funny, Winona! I pass Churchill Downs every day, and on Derby day, I flee the city! It was too wet to work the ground at the farm, so my dh and I went to Indiana and shopped in some antique stores.
