I'm completely nuts. Our lovely cat has been belled so our lovely birds don't get eaten, so when I saw her playing in the grass, I had to be sure. It was a gopher!

I had never seen one...alive...before. Apparently, the cat hadn't either. I guess she brought it home to show me, because it was completely uninjured, just blindly nuzzling the lawn and occasionally threatening the cat with claws and teeth.

I thought they were bigger...it's only the size of a mouse. Maybe it's a mole? Sure looks gophery...but what am I basing that on? I scooped it into a watering can to show my daughter. Um, live and learn? So now "Fuzzy" is our guest for the weekend. I can't see killing it now that we've fed it dandelion, carrots, and cabbage, and heaven sakes given it a name, but I don't know where on earth to turn it loose either. Everywhere you look it's lawns and farmground, no place for a gopher with a name.

I can't believe I've gone this soft. Must have been in the sun too much today. :) Well, nature always has something to teach us. Darn cat. :)

We make a difference.

This morning...problem solved. What a relief. Guess the lesson learned is that wild critters do best in the wild. I also learned that there is actually a type of gopher in Washington that is considered a threatened species (and this is a problem?). There is a gopher preserve set up for them. Incredible. People are so odd, the things we exterminate and preserve...there's just no telling.

We make a difference.
