Harley, our not-so-macho boy cat decided to get in on this spring bird catching thing that all of the other cats are doing - but he apparently couldn't bring himself to hurt the dang bird. Instead, he very carefully brought me a tiny baby mockingbird and left in the kitchen.
Obviously, if the other cats saw it, or even if the dog saw it, it was a goner. Unfortunately we can't find its nest either.
So for now, he's resting in a cage.
Meanwhile, this cranky little fellow wants his dinner and he's very insistent on it.
I gave him a tiny bit of sugar water because he looked a little limp (it's very humid and hot out), then some bread soaked in the water, then a tiny bit of crushed snail, and lastly, a tiny bit of canned cat food. (He doesn't like the cat food or the bread much...)
I haven't found any more snails running (LOL) around outside and it's about time to feed him again (He eats every 15 minutes or so...)
Help! Any ideas? I don't think we have a bait shop near by and I haven't found any worms in my yard...

awww so sorry to hear s/he didnt make it...baby birds can be hard to care for...I found a site a while back that had information on what to feed about 20 different types of baby birds, I don't have it right now, but with it being babybird season I'll probably end up needing to find it if we get any babies this year ourselves.

I used to be a rehabber. For most young birds, you can soak dog food in water and add a little cooked egg to this. Crush the moist dog food, mix with egg and hand feed it it's a younger bird to get him started. Keep any excess in the frige, make new in a few days as it will sour.
Gradually start to add the bird's natural foods as it gets older.
You can also try calling your local parks director and see if they know any rehabbers in your area.

Crushed snail...who woulda thought?? I haven't a clue what to feed but hope the little guy makes it!

one idea for you is if you have a pet shop nearby..they tend to sell crickets to the folks that buy the lizards and such..so that might be an option for you.

Erin.. I am having to rewrite this I accidentally lost the previous one I wrote! ARGGGH 
Anyway... My kids brought one home a few years agao after it had been blown from its nest after a storm. I called an animal rescue & they told me to moisten some dry cat food with warm water until it is mushy & feed it from a spoon. If it's old enough, it will take it from the spoon himself. That is much easier to me than mashing bugs!
I will warn you & say watch out for its back end after it eats! You will not believe what comes out of such a little thing! 
I kept mine in a cool whip bowl w/some napkins. They back up to the edge of the bowl & bombs away over the edge. Just like they would do in the nest to keep it clean.
