If you're a seller at a farmer's market, do you carry insurance?

Does the market require you to? Does your state?

If you don't, why not?

If you do carry insurance, what kind? General liability, product liability, or both? Generally how much does it cost? If it's a rider on a current policy, is it home or farmowner's? Is it cheaper as a rider?

I am just looking into this, and I'm geeked out. The NY Farmer's Market organization offers it for about $350, but man. I have NO operating budget this year. Yikes!

Sorry for all the detailed questions, but I've been searching gardening and farming forums all night, and I haven't found a lot.

Instead of checking the Sole Proprietor box, check the LLC box on your business license. Then pay a little more money, but I don't recall how much. Not horrific, though, like copyrighting. I'd guess each state is different.

Tracey, what did you have to do to get set up as an LLC? Was it expensive?

I don't. In fact, it's difficult to get for the soap industry; although not so much for soap as lotion. Spoke with an insurance agent who's recommendation was to register my business as an LLC instead of whatever I have it as (individual ownership, something like that) because then if someone went after me they could only take the business and not my house. Said even with insurance, an LLC is the best way to go.

As for the market; I've not been to a show or market (yet) where it was required. A business license, yes, but not insurance.
