I've written 2 articles for the daily newspaper in the town we lived in. The publisher also publishes several magazines, and I approached the editor of those magazines about freelancing. She was very supportive and gave me an assignment right off the bat. It was published in a magazine that came out today!! My other article will be in the special "Bridal Guide" the newspaper puts out each February or March. Anyway, I've had my dissertation published but this is different. The pay is very low, but it's a start!

Oh, the article is about a very old Catholic boarding school, church, etc, that is now an antiques mall, bed & breakfast, restaurant, etc.

I must warn you that seeing your name in print is ADDICTIVE!!!!

I've been a newspaper reporter, and then editor, for the last nearly 28 years now....when I started I wrote community news for $8.20 PER WEEK!!!! I worked really hard at that and was made a full time writer in about a year...so keep at it!!!!

But I'm warning you, once that ink gets in your blood, you are hooked for life!!!! ha!!!

Best wishes! I am so happy for you!!!! this will be a great stepping off platform for you to do freelance writing for magazines and others as well!

You can bury a lot of troubles digging in the dirt!

Hip hip horray! From a former reporter (working to become a freelance writer) to you ... CONGRATULATIONS!

Thanks for all your encouragement and kind words. I looked to see if the magazine is online, but the newspaper's webpage says they're putting it online this spring. When I get my copy, I'll try to scan it or something, if I can figure that out.

Good for you Patti! My best friend, Joy, is a freelance writer. She is also working on her Masters degree in psychology, but every morning she gets up early and works on her articles first. It takes a lot of discipline, but writing is her passion. I'm sure you will be quite a success.

It's called Arcadia Academy (which is it's original "school" name), and it's located in Arcadia Valley in southeast Missouri. Another town, Ironton, butts up to Arcadia Valley, and between the 2 towns & not even counting the Academy, there are numerous antique shops, a fabulous pottery studio/shop, and other artisans with shops. My article is just about the Academy, but I'm planning to add other information to it and submit a longer article to be published elsewhere, hopefully a magazine like Missouri Life or something. It's a beautiful area with so much to do -- several state parks very close, etc.
