Has anyone had any luck doing this? My lettuce, spinach, radishes, etc. are ready now and our Farmers Market doesn't start for another three weeks. There is way more than we can eat and I don't want it wasted. I am going to put a sign down by the road "Garden Fresh Produce & Eggs" and see what happens. I would appreciate any input from anyone else who has tried this! Thanks!

Luckily, the Farmers Market has started back up! YAY!!

Pinokeeo, do you have a Farmers Market nearby that you could sell your extra produce at? That is a really good way to go because the people that come to the Farmers Market are there specifically looking for produce, eggs, etc.

I've just recently started producing more than we can eat, so I am thankful for all the advice here. I was wondering how to go about selling from home. I like the idea of a roadside simple, but I think I'll start with craigslist.

If it helps any, we have a 'fresh eggs' sign down on the highway and one in front of our farm. Because of it, we now have a great 'walk in' business. This year, we're gonna adapt the sign with a slot for fresh veggies. We'll put it out as we have produce available, and take it down when we're sold out. Just in case it helps any of you --two weeks ago one of the ladies at our bank asked if I would bring her some eggs (I'm only in town on Tuesdays). I delivered them as promised, and today when I went back, I had orders for 6 dozen more. Plus, three of them wants a list of all the veggies I'm growing, and what will be available on a weekly basis. I'm finding out that the customers are out there, I just have to sometimes look in places I would never have thought of before!!!! Good luck with the roadside stand. I really want to hear how it works for you!

Thanks ladies for all the great ideas!! Katie, I would love to do the "mini" CSA thing! What fun that would be!

Don't forget to put an ad in your local paper in the classifieds ( a weekly paper is best and very inexpensive) Lots of folks look there to find what they are looking for. Also, a fun way to let folks know about your business, make up some simple book markers. Put your name, address and phone number on one side and a list of produce for sale on the other side. . . decorate it Farmgirl style and give them out to folks you meet at the post office, tellers at the bank. . even "donate" the bookmarks to the local library . . . they can insert one into a book that's being taken out on loan. . . a great way to get the word out and fun to make at night while watching tv.

I found that asking some of my friends ( send an email list message ?) , if they wanted a box for a flat fee. I do a really big box, minimum 12 different things, each enough for a meal for a family of four. Eggs and bread are extra. But you could arrange any kind of box. Basically it's like a CSA , but with just a few families. It was pretty lucrative last year for us, and the people were really happy. I would deliver weekly on a certain day.

Happy growing ! Katie

Check into your states roadside stand laws!

Some states require permits and refrideration! Ridiculous!

My state did until last year. The roadsiders finally won that fight. Now we only have to have our stand be nonpermanent or more than 10 feet from the side of the road, but must always be more than 10 feet from your front door. Silly, but doable.

It couldn't hurt to post, you never know if one of your neighbors will check it, and upside, if the listings are slower moving, you only have to post once in a while.

Jennifer,

Thanks for the tip about Craiglist. We do use it for selling horses but we are kind of in a "no-man's land" half way between Tucson and Sierra Vista, 35 to 40 miles from either. That's why I was going to try the sign to get the locals driving past. I have noticed ads for eggs on the Tucson Craigslist.

Craigslist may or may not be bustling in your area, but it's worth a look. It's quite a busy place for free exposure in my neighborhood. Try the Farm and Garden section! You might even find another farmer with something you'd want to trade.

I have only sold produce once for produce. We did okay, but I plan to sell eggs by the roadside this year. I will build a simple for it.
