are there rules you have to go by?? Does the IRS care? How do you ship the item to the winner? Do you charge for shipping or pay for it yourself and consider it promotion related? Send it certified mail to make sure it gets there?? What if the receiver isn't happy with it?? Tough luck or send it back on their own dime?? My dime?? More trouble than it's worth or is it worth it??

I was thinking of doing a give away of one of my knit caps. I know it's the wrong time of year but they are something I do and have gotten raves on.

I twitter and was thinking of something else to get some more readers. I still don't really know what I'm doing and am taking it very slowly.

Any thoughts would be muchly appreciated!!

I've never done one on my blog but did for my co-op twice and put it on Small Town Living Magazine! It did great and both times the winners were happy with their items.

But, now you've encouraged me to do one on my blog next month. I'm doing one now for my facebook fan page for my etsy Jeanpatchbymk shop.

You'll have lots of fun doing one.

I've done 2 giveaways on my blog - the first was a collection of vintage lace and ephemera, some old photos and a cuff bracelet I had made. My second (just did this one a couple of weeks ago) was for 2 vintage crinolines from my stash. For the first one all I required was a comment left on my blog. For the second I added extra chances if comments were also left on a readers facebook page or they mentioned it on their blog. Both brought in new readers and were tons of fun. I ship us mail, priority if possible, with delivery confirmation. Depending on what's in the box I also might get it insured. Beware of folks who just bounce from blog to blog entering contests (I try and check out everyone's blog to see if they are real people). I really want my treasures to go to someone who will appreciate them, not some greedy gal who doesn't really care a lick about my blog.
Good luck!

Thanks for the help. I thought that's probably how it worked but wanted to make sure.

When I have done giveaways on my blog I just do it...list a time it will end and what exactly I am giving away and when time is up an I draw a name I post the winner and then mail it to them. Thats it. I gave away a pair of hand knitted socks recently and have done a few other giveaways over the years. Always lots of fun and you sure see how many people read your blog. Lots never comment much any other time. I think it is really fun. I think it is a great time to do a giveaway for a knit cap!
