Some have author's next to them, some don't, some say anonymous, some are vague and say something like Author Unknown or Chinese Proverb...Irish Quote.

What are the rules?

My mom makes handpainted cards and she'd like to add some quotes but we are concerned about the legal part of it.

Thanks!

Stephanie,
If your mom uses quotes from scriptures...like Proverbs in the Bible, then those are basically the "fair use" type of quotes. They don't belong to anyone in particular, and everyone in general. Does that help? I believe, but don't quote me on this ;-) that deceased peoples quotes are also public domain, as in Sister Theresa and Ben Franklin and Abe Lincoln.

I think so... I think also because they are usually "fair use" type quotes. :)

How come we can all use them on forum signatures? Is it because we are not making money off it?

Hi Stephanie! It would be a good idea to discuss this with a copyright attorney before you proceed with using anything. I'm pretty sure if your Mom is selling the cards, she definitely needs to secure express permission from the author or the owner of the rights to the work before using them, at which point they will also inform her as to how they want to be credited on the artwork, what they want to receive for the use of these quotes, etc. There is also something called the "Fair Use" rule under which some of what you have listed might fall. Here is a link that might explain it better: http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/article-30100.html No matter what, please be sure to read up on it thoroughly and contact a copyright attorney before you use anything - especially for sales purposes, ok? I hope this helps a little! - Nini
