Well, my husband put the cooler and "Fresh Eggs" sign out today for the first time! After reading posts about selling from the house, we decided to take the plunge. We are on a gravel road, but we do get short-cut traffic between New York and Vermont.
I also set up a skeleton website for our future business, with a page for "the girls." www.copperdoghill.com

Rosie - You'll be in 'test' mode every year you have the bees! Just when you think you have them figured out ... they change! No two years will ever be the same! this is my 3rd year with hives. The first year was FANTASTIC! Last year I lost all but one of my hives because of late spring frost and the girls not bunching up to keep warm. Thenn we collected a late swarm (free bees!) that I had to take the fall harvest from my surviving hive to feed the new bees with.
I split my strongest hive and requeened it this past week. The new hive killed my new queen (never had that happen before!) and my strong hive is laying drones .... just ordered 2 new Carnolian queens from BetterBee this morning.
On taking eggs to the farmer's market. In some states, selling eggs on the farm is fine, but when you sell the same eggs off the farm (like at a FM) you need to comply with regulations. Your state AG office should be able to tell you what they are.

Darlene, that is inspiring news about your egg business! To answer your question, I bought three packages of Buckfast bees from Texas, and this week I will pick up three packages of Italian bees from GA. I am testing the two types to see which works best in our climate. The first year is such a learning curve - I feel like I am "testing" everything! |

Well, girls, my first three bee packages arrived yesterday by USPS! How exciting it was to install my first two packages in their hives! A huge adreneline rush and an even bigger sense of satisfaction that I did it on my own.I gave myself a C grade, because I made some mistakes, but overall it went well. I will do better next time. Today I am taking the third package to a friend's blueberry field and will install them there to help with his pollination. I'll post when I have the whole story on the newsletter page of the website! This weekend I pick up the last three packages. My fellow Empire State Mountain FarmGirls will be there to help and take pictures of the installation! |

Well congrats!!! WE did just that with a cooler on the corner several years ago and well been in business and growing each day!@! I am starting a newsletter too, great idea. Your dog is a doll!!
Good luck with those bees!! We have thought bout buyin some just so we can have good pollination on the veggies and fruit trees. Where did you get yours?

congrats on selling your eggs, I too am considering taking my eggs to the farmers market in town. As of now I supply my friends and neighbors and co workers with fresh eggs and they love them. I also heard from a medical report that people who have intence allergies they are incouraged to buy honey from local bee keepers because it builds the persons ammune system up to the local pollins.. How true not sure, My allergies are not as bad this year. Might keep that in mind for your bee keeping business Rosie.
