Hello,

Make sure you are aware of your state regulations with regards to selling canned goods ie: jellies, jams, pickles, etc. at Farmers Markets or Market Days.

In Texas, to sell any food item to the public you need a Texas Manufacturing License. (I don' think this applies to baked bread, not sure though)

Product must be made in a certified commercial kitchen.

The person making the product must have a health certificate.

Your labels need to be approved and comply with FDA regulations.

All of this needs to be approved before your first sale.
Many Farmers Markets or Market Days do not necessarily ask you for this information, some do and some don't. Please be aware that the FDA is traveling to these shows and slapping fines on unsupecting vendors for non compliance. I know personally of one lady who was slapped with a $2000.00 fine.

The markets do not feel that it is there responsibility to inform you of the federal regulations. They feel that is your responsibility since you are in business to make money.

To get more information or get your license please see the numbers below for Texas residents:

Texas Manufactures 713-767-3240
Mike Lindsey, Montgomery County Health Dept. Texas 936-538-8038

Hope this helps some of you.

Best Regards,
Julie

Local Harvest is great for locating Farmers Markets as well as other sustainable Agriculture.
Remember that not all Farmers Markets are listed with the USDA and put on this site.

Julie

I decided to find a Farmer's Market in the Houston area so I could buy locally. Sad to say I have to travel a minimum of 40 miles to one. But I thought I would share the website that helped me find Farmer's Markets. Fast and easy. Provides listings by state. I did some other local searches, and found a couple more.

http://www.ams.usda.gov/farmersmarkets/

and another site:
