A question for those of you selling handmade items on places like Etsy:

Do you have to have a vendor's license? Have you worried about reporting taxes? Does that only come into play when you reach a certain income level?

I sew church vestments. Each one is custom. I want to get some simpler ones made up and post on Etsy. Just wondering if there is more of this official business that I need to think of.

I have to collect sales tax on certain things. At specific times I file a form and turn in the money I've collected. I'm in Maine.

Yes, the income has to be claimed. Keep your receipts so that you can deductthose expenses from gross income. There might also be other deductions your entitled to also. You should talk to a professional to find out exactly what's required by your state and the federal gov't.

I have a business license and use it mainly for being able to buy for resale. That way I don't have to pay tax in WA on items I'm purchasing for my business. If someone purchases from me on the internet and they live in WA I have to charge them sales tax. Out of state does not get charged tax.

In my state, Indiana, you apply for a retail tax ID number. Cost $25 and you get the licence the next day. You pay sales tax on anything you sell within the state. Out of state sales don't pay IN sales tax. Check with your state's Department of Revenue. You can get most any info you need online.
