I was just reading about working from home. So, am I reading/understanding this correctly? You have to have several items to sell?? Such as soaps, crochet, natural cleansers, etc., because it's just too narrow otherwise??
How do you keep it all straight?? Have to be super organized??

I agree... every good business plan has some diversification. In a non-craft example, think of a plumber who can lay the initial pipe, can repair the toilet or the sink or even help with the installtion of a half bath! I do calligraphy as original and prints which led me to offering printing services and design work to others.

Maybe this kind of like a "jane-of-all-trades-at-one-time" kind of thing. I have a cleaning service and for the most part that covers the bills, but then I also sell my crafts and goodies around the holidays. I'm also considering checking into getting a paper route. Nothing wrong with staying busy as long as it makes you happy right?

they're also called "multiple profit centers" the idea is,as one area wanes,(like selling winter scarves when spring is near) the other will pick up (like scented candles) so there's always $$ rolling in,that's the idea. Go where your heart leads you. In my music store,aside from the music books,I also sell my hand knit and machine sewn items.

I do several things. Jewelry is my main focus and love in life, but as the creative strings pulls me, I make other things as well. I do a lot of "fixing" of old broken jewelry ( not mine, my jewelry doesnt break - thats my warranty!).
My clients like the different things I make. This year I have made crocheted neckwarmers. Short scarves with buttons.
I also have my own chai distributorship. I do the occasional running of sound systems ( my degree). I do the odd accounting work for folks. I also sell homemade goodies to friends and family.
I suppose I do have my hands in a few fires....but thats my choice. Nothing boring for this SAHM. I could do the jewelry alone, but the other stuff is fun and brings me joy and additional pay...who can say no to that? |

Im not sure I can answer this question exactly. But have you read Barbara Winter's "making a living without a job" ? You may find some assistance there. It sounds like what you are wanting to do is start a home based business and wondering how to make it financially viable. I have a small business, and right now it isnt doing spectacularly well. I sell things each week and it brings food to the table but it isnt enough to cover the mortgage. I think bath products are hard to sell since the market is very saturated with excellent products. But that isnt to say that your product wouldnt have something special about it. I would suggest coming up with a line of things. That way you can test the market and see if there is a need for what you are selling, then see what sells best. Its kind of a process in my experience. Can anyone chime in and offer some advice ?
