Most small farms now look for value added products to increase there income and help you get rid of surplus.
We make garlic powder from garlic that is not pretty enough to sell.
Herbs and mushrooms that didin't sell at market end up in the dehydrator and sold as dried. We dry hot peppers for eating and decoration . We make garlic braids , Garlic Apple jelly , and garlic herb dog biscuits. The dried herbs peppers and garlic powder I make into herb blends and dried dip mixes. At C I don't have time right now for crafts right now .
What do you do?

My herbs are still producing from last Spring's plantings and transplants.....I've been dehydrating them and making seasonings. They jar up well and a little goes a long way. My oregano is doing the best....I really can't keep up with it.

We provide "educational tours" at our One Acre Farm. My homeschooled girls do the presentations, the little kids get to feed the animals, pictures can be taken with Mocha the goat or Cookie the pig. Mocha is being trained right now to pull a cart and we'll have cart rides, too. At the end of the tour, a short lesson in gardening is given and the little kids get to plant a bean seed in a newspaper pot and take it back to school or home. The cost is really cheap....$1 kid for basic 1 hour or $2 kid for the longer tour and lessons. Local homeschoolers enjoy coming and day care centers, preschools, etc... are getting in on it, too. The little extra $ really helps in covering feed and hay costs. Plus, it counts for a lot of school subjects for the girls.....speech and communication, business math, animal husbandry, etc...

Blessings
Catherine

I am so excited to see the postings here - I am looking for ways to add "value" to the things that come from my farm. Right now, we have been selling lamb (meat) in the autumn. I always include a few photos of the lamb, information on how it's raised and packed, and my favorite recipes. For instance, I think that if people don't know what to do with a lamb shank, they're much less likely to purchase one again. I've also included a spice baggie with the herbs and spices to make an herb-crusted leg of lamb, so people who are just beginning cooks can do something spectacular with our product. Around Easter of each year, I've also added a Cadbury cream egg to our dozen eggs that we sell, just for fun (OK, that's mostly because I just like them myself as a treat...)

Sometimes I sell handspun yarn from my animals...or carded roving (not as often) or things knitted from my wool. Havn't done it as much lately, though.
