Posted - Apr 06 2009 : 11:27:15 AM My Dear Farmgirl Sisters
I have been developing a doll line for my blujay store. The dolls are sorta like a rag doll with curly hair up in two pony tails with cute homespun ribbons. They are very country and all the dolls will be dressed similarly. Each doll will have her very own quilt.
My question is.......Would this line of doll be considered politically correct? I would like to make dolls for children all nationalities and cultures. This would include African American, Asian, Spanish, Caucasian, etc. I would try to dress the dolls in the native countries dress and try to tie in the culture as well. I would like to be able to donate some of these dolls to our church for distribution throughout the world and the last thing I would ever want to do is offend anyone.
What do you think? Am I being politically incorrect by just asking this or by not knowing what to do in this situation?
Please be honest with me.

Posted - May 18 2009 : 4:17:07 PM I think it's a great idea; go for it and best of success to you! I know a woman who makes white and black dolls, dresses them in tea/coffee stained clothing she makes from found objects and uses my sheep wool for their hair. The white dolls have white sheep wool for hair and the black dolls have brown gray sheep wool for hair. She also signs, dates and names each one. You've got a wonderful idea; don't allow the dream to die.

Posted - May 17 2009 : 4:23:26 PM I think this is great. I have a friend who will only buy dolls that are of different ethnicity. She wants her daughter to know not everyone looks like her. I think it would be good to include a little info about the country and/or ethnic background with each doll.
Good Luck on your venture. |

Posted - May 08 2009 : 3:09:50 PM I think it is a marvelous idea! You may already have this in the works, but it might be neat for each doll, especially those from different cultures to have a story to go with them...this would show that you've done your research and demonstrate that you are sharing knowledge about different cultures and ways of life. And, if somebody didn't like something you'd always be able to say that "yes, there are different people of all kinds in every culture, but such and such story about the women in this city touched me personally, so I had to make a doll about her!"

Posted - Apr 21 2009 : 1:26:54 PM I think children don't have a politically bone in their body. A doll is doll and we love them all. Plus what a better way to learn how to associate with our friends of color and creed. My best friend in kindergarten and ear;y years was a black girl named Donna and a black buy named Carl, and I was always welcomed in their houses. God doesn't look at our color.

Posted - Apr 11 2009 : 3:36:04 PM Sherone I think it is a great idea & it is definitely politically CORRECT!! The more people teach their children to be accepting and tolerant of other cultures the better off this world will be. Of course that is just my 2 cents.
I would love to see some of them completed.

Posted - Apr 10 2009 : 09:31:28 AM I say go for it but you have to know, in this day and age, no matter what you do, someone is going to get their dander up about something. If someone gets offended, show them another site and let them go there. I'd say they wouldn't be worth the time to straighten it out for them.
Isn't it odd that we have to be sooooo careful before we do anything nowadays?? Try to remember that the Constitution doesn't say that we have a right to not be offended.

Posted - Apr 09 2009 : 11:54:09 AM I don't see a problem, either, though I would be cautious about possible stereotypes(a head scarf for example, on an african american doll)...our little friend, Olive, who is 1, picked out an african american doll named "Harriet" from a "green" toy company website--and Olive is very caucasian. Kids love anything that catches their eyes, for sure!!! I can't wait to see them! |

Posted - Apr 09 2009 : 11:38:22 AM I don't see a problem either. Have fun researching the outfits for each doll. I would add a doll from India and a middle Eastern doll to your collection too. For some reason they are usually left out of the mix.

Posted - Apr 08 2009 : 9:57:08 PM What an amazing idea. I don't see why there would be any issue about creating dolls with nationalities. When you look at the big selling dolls they are of every type. Go for it and have fun. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise! Farm Girl Hugs!

Posted - Apr 06 2009 : 11:42:53 AM I think it is great that you would put so much thought into political correctness it to your dolls. I think it is a cute idea, growing up my grandfather would buy me dolls from every culture (they were knock off madame alexander dolls) when he traveled. I still have them not as cute as they should be. like I tell my husband and kids do what you love and love doing it, if anybody has a problem with it thats their problem. |
