Posted - Jul 15 2008 : 9:21:07 PM I have been away from the board for several months. I have completely lost my mind. I have a almost 14 month old son and the end of April opened a toy store. I was so frustrated not being able to find great toys for my Son. I am a speciality toy store. I carry enviromentally friendly and more of the waldorf inspired toys. I have had to bring in a few mainstream toys to keep the majority of the people happy. I buy american whenever possible and bring in a lot of the great wooden European toys. Any suggestions of any type of speciality toys I should carry would be appreciated. Any advice on retail would be great. I just got a wild notion and went for it. I have no retail background.

Posted - Jul 22 2008 : 09:23:02 AM Thanks for all of the great tips on toys to buy. I will check them out. I have a huge selection of playsilks, I love them. My store is tiny only 850 sqft. It is attached to a antique store, and everything is run thru their cash register so I don't have to always be there. I am still working my regular job to pay for the toys. The name of my store is Hop, Skip & Jump Toys. I don't have a website yet. I'm not sure I will for some time. I jsut don't have the time right now. Between the baby, house, my husband and both jobs I feel like I have enough on my plate right now.

Posted - Jul 19 2008 : 07:50:15 AM Bravo Laura. I applaud you for doing what you saw as a necessary endeavour. Where in Washington are you? What's the name of your store. MB

Posted - Jul 19 2008 : 06:43:25 AM Oooh I love toys! I totally understand where you're coming from--it is so hard to move past the technicolor/lightup/plinky music stuff.
Some of our favorites are:
Lauri Toys--they are made in the USA. They make peg sets (the stacking ones are plastic but they are our favorite), crepe rubber puzzles and a few other things, and they are reasonably priced :-)
Maggie's friends by Galt--there are the cutest wood and rope dolls that have removeable clothes. They are a huge hit here!
DD's play kitchen is by Willow Toys--he makes everything by hand. They are spendy but so beautiful and well-made.
Playsilks and streamers are a big hit too. Have you seen the Bilibo? We keep meaning to get one of those. Let me think of more...
Farmmom to my 3 year old farm tot, and wife to a country boy! To learn more about me, here is my blog: http://mcadmom.wordpress.com/
