Do you think old fashioned lye soap would sell well in antique shops? Any ideas for eye-catching displays? I keep thinking rustic basket or crate, but there must be better ideas out there.

Ladies, these are some great ideas! I've been toying with the idea of selling my soap, bath products and handwoven items for a while now. Thanks for all the great ideas -- and Jackie, thanks for asking the question. I wish you lotsa luck with yours!

TNFarmgirl - If you would like to learn about making soap, visit http://www.millersoap.com/ They have lots of great information for beginners. You can't make actual soap without use lye. It's not nearly as scary as everyone thinks. You just have to be extra careful and take precautions. If you would rather not deal with the lye, you could try melt and pour soap. I think I saw some that is very hard similar to handmade soap. I must warn you though that if you plan to sell outside, the melt and pour soap will sweat like crazy in hot and humid conditions.

I saw a soap display the other dy that might work. There was a big galvanized wash tub and small galvanized pails in the tub. Each pail had a different type of soap and had a garden stake type marker indicating the scent. The spaces between the smaller pails were filled in with small potted herbs. I didn't have a camera or I would have taken a picture. It was very appealing.

At a cute antique shop restaurant they have homemade soap that is cut with what I use to cut "Waverly" slices of cheese or carrots or what ever is hard enough for this cutter to cut. It makes waves on the cut. The lady rapped it in clear wrap paper and tied with a cute curling ribbon. Her soap is different colors at the top than at the bottom. The bottom has rosemary. I can send you a picture of the kitchen tool if you want me to.

Hi Ya Girls,
I have looked on line for directions for making homemade soap. You suggest the Lye way and is there any other way. I am going to need your advice a bit here. I just want to sell homemade soap at local events. can you help me out..thanks a bunch, I am going out to feed the hungry masses...will be back.

Love Lizabeth's idea for the drawers.
Saw a neat idea for cutting soaps made to look more 'rustic'...the bars were cut about half way, and then broken apart.

If you are looking for a display container, what about misfit sewing drawers? often you can find orphaned drawers from sewing cabinets at sales, thrift stores, or antique stores. Depending on your soap bar size they might stand up in these nicely. |

Oh, that is a terrific idea! I had tried using tea stained paper at one point, but decided it was too tedious. The paper fell apart if I got it too wet. Cheese cloth is a much better idea. Thanks a bunch!

Jackie I sell lye soap at my antique shows, I buy cheese cloth , put it thru a good strong coffee bath and wrap the soap then I make up an oldfashioned lable place on top and tie with a gemp string
