Ladies -

Here is an idea for your local farmers market - Compost Tea. I recently found out that this simple mixtue is selling for around $6.00 a gallon at farmers markets through out the country! My dad and I use to make this to feed our plants and it works great. I have an article on it on my site http://smallfarm.about.com/od/organicfarming/a/composttea.htm

If your not familiar with compost tea read the article and then do a search on google. Lots of good info. I am making batches to sell at the market in 2 weeks.

Let me know how it works for you!

Well, dang. So, is this tea I made from the 5year old manure going to be good to use? Or sell?

The master gardeners are refering to compost tea made with manure. E coli can happen anytime manure is used. A lot of organic gardeners use manure. Wash your veggies good.

Traditional compost tea is made with good old fashioned compost which contains all the good things that make your soil healthy ( eggs shells, leaves, kitchen veggies, ect) is perfectly safe. It is the same as compost! You just get your nutrients to the plants faster.

This is sometime confusing because a lot of people call manure compost!

A warning I learned in master gardener class: using compost tea on your veggies can cause them to become infected with e-coli and other nasty things. I would stick to using it in the flower garden just to be safe.

I was just wondering what to do with those big plastic bottles of kitty scoop sand. Now I know -- I will reusee them and fill them with compost tea! Otherwise I will just put the extra plastic bottles in the recycling bin.

When I click on your link, I get the basic about.com page, not a specific article. I tried cutting/pasting the link and retyping it, too. I can't get to your article. I'd love to read it, though, so any help would be appreciated.

I'll do that. I'll have to test it on my own gardens before I try to sell to others. But, hey, I just found this 5 year old pile of composted horse manure and I'll just bet it'll make a dandy tea!

Thanks for that link, Tamara. What a wealth of info on that website. I'm going to make that compost tea for our farm girl's market.
