I didn't do it last year, because the kids were still so small, but I am trying it again this year, with my mother-in-law.
So far we bought a walk in green house and have been looking through seed catalogs and planning the garden.
Ours starts in April, we hope to have some started plants to sell and and some quilted crafts to begin with.

What are the rest of you up to?

Meg,
We make a variety of stuff, you never know who is going to come along that day and have to have whatever you have. I'm really into the unusual vegi's, but my mother-in-law likes the tried and true, so we usually have a nice balance. Like Lisa mentioned, dog treats sold really well on somedays and eggs always sold out. The best advice I have is have a good variety. Another thing I never thought would sell was dried flower petals, but they did well too.
You also have to check with the rules at your market, they might let you sell some things and not others. And if you don't like the rules, get on the board of directors and change them.

I've never sold at the market, as this is my first year with some real land (yay!), but I'm really considering it this year. There is a meeting on Monday night about a new market that might open up in a town about 10 minutes from here (starts late may). I think I'll go check it out.

From all you experienced girls, what sells well? Any tips? Can you mix crafts, produce etc. at your table? What's a fair price for a table?

I've been searching through my heritage seed catalogue, and thinking of growing lots of unusual veg - multicoloured carrots, rainbow swiss chard, lemon cukes (they look like lemons!), purple beans etc. And also doing a lot of sewing to sell too, and maybe baked goods..

You girls start really early out west! Our markets don't start until late May or June here in NH. Must be our SHORT growing season I guess. My market starts the 3rd weekend in June, and I still really don't have much to sell at that time, except for my goat milk soaps, and maybe some baked goods. I might sell home made dog biscuits again. They did real well last year. So did my purple haze carrots!! People love those, especially when you cut them up on a plate to show the pretty orange inside. I'm growing double what I did last year for carrots. In the next couple weeks I'll be starting my tomato and pepper seeds in the house. My greenhouse collapsed because I didn't have time to get it taken down before the snow came. It really didn't work that well anyway. It was always too hot even with the windows open and a fan going. I fried almost all my seedlings. It was very aggravating. I did better starting my seeds in the dining room window. Very sunny, and easy to control the temps :)

I am sooooo looking forward to warm sunny weather. It has been so dreary and snowy this winter. I'm ready for spring now!

I'd rather live my life with a "full plate" than an empty one. Life is not a rehearsal... eat up!

Hi Shirley - I wanted to get into the market this year, but I went to the site to see about applying and it says the only new vendors they're accepting apps from are vegetable growers. So, it's not going to be this year for me! I'll try again next year. I suspect this is flood related.

I have been knitting ,spinning all winter. Now I have to make soap and I think Ill make some baskets this year, they quit selling very well a couple years ago, so maybe they will start selling this year.I think good market basket might work.
Our farmers market opens again in April. It closes for the months of Jan,feb,March.

Oh, I would love to do the Farmers Market in our area. The fees are a little steep here, but probably would be worth it. I raise vegetables, strawberries, few raspberries, few blueberries, daylilies & mums for Fall, oh and the pumpkins and such. I love the picture of loading an ole pickup and traveling there with baskets of homegrown... My husband says money needs to be apart of that picture... not just because it looks good... But I am still in the thinking... with the straw hat & don't forget the apron... LOL...
Best of Wishes to you on your adventure, Pamela Shoppe Keeper
