Posted - Feb 06 2008 : 1:29:15 PM Do you set regular hours for working at your business? I have had trouble doing this - I guess I'm easily distracted. But my dh says it's essential if I'm going to be a success. What's worked for you?

Posted - Feb 09 2008 : 09:06:24 AM this is such an age old problem i think, kinda like when you go on a diet and loved ones bring you chocolates. many family and friends think that because i am a stay at home "omie" that i just sit around and eat bonbons, well it is true that my time is my own, in theory, but i have to say to all, after going to college for 9 years, having 4 children , a professional life as an occupational therapist for 15+ years, i am busier as a stay at home housewife than i have ever been in my life. i do believe that part of my life is tending to my home and i take that seriously. i love to cook and put thought and time into that, i have never had a "clean" house in my life, but those who come here say it is warm and inviting and effort goes into that. i am not a shining example of a monetarily successful businesswoman by any means, if we were counting on my income, there would be no money for bonbon OR bill paying for that matter. but i have looked at this issue to see what i can do to be more successful, and not feel frustrated at the end of the day. here are some of the things that have helped me. 1. my top priority is being a great "omie". 2. my next priority is putting creative items out into the world that help people see the beauty in nontraditional beautiful things. ie, my acorn crafts.in other words, i have a mission with my work beyond bringing in money. 3. i am not a production crafter, i'm a one of a kind kinda crafter. now: i have stopped referring to my work in a diminished way, if people call me and say, what were you doing i say, i was working. i schedule my interruptions, i am not led by them. so i do see the value of a schedule. ....and the scedule can be set daily. i acknowledge work that looks like fun as work, to myself. ie if i answer emails about my work, that is work, even though i enjoy doing it. sorry i am getting too wordy here. anyway sherri, you are in my opinion a very productive crafter and your are putting beautiful, quality items into the world. so in mind you are successful. if the idea of a schedule is dauting, just remember you lucky girl you are your own ceo. so you can set a schedule for 1 day at a time and ease into it. when i have a deadline i absolutely have a scedule and dont answer the phone, just let my machine do it, and return phone calls during my lunch breaks or email when possible. i hope this ramblin makes sense in some ways. i am a work in progress on this subject for sure. hope some of the more veteran homeworkers will post in with some great tips.! you always post the most stimulating threads.
love fran

Posted - Feb 08 2008 : 10:56:54 AM It has been a crazy year- everytime I get a schedule up and running something chaotic happens to throw us out of whack! And now with dh laid up.. It was just essential. It will take a week or 2 for everyone to know mama is serious.
