I believe so...I think when I was little they called them "bucket caps" if that makes it any more clear (like mud )

Jonni I'm not sure what a boater cap is, but for boys, I make the same cap, with only a couple of rows of the brim so it kind of slants down and doesn't roll up like the girls. Is that similar to what you're talking about?

So great, Sherri--I sure wish my 3 year old niece would wear hats. She's not a fan, but my nephew sure is! Could you crochet a boater cap for boys? The low brimmed ones that are good for summer?
