I have some stuff I would love to get rid of and I'm not sure the best place to sell it. Would I be better to take stuff to an antique dealer and sell in thru them. Place it on ebay or craig's list? I have a huge container of antique butter dishes, old fashioned straight razors, shaving mugs and the engagement ring from my fist marriage. Any advice would be great.

Laura I have been selling on Ebay for many years - we trash hunt and sell items on there- go look up under the search mode that lets you put in seller ID and check out some of my recent auctions my id is enchantedwoodcottagechic all together like that. The organ we just sold was in the trash and worked fine. It is like found money.

I'd look at the craigslist in your area and maybe list your items through that posting.
As to your ring, why don't you take that in to a reputable jeweler's who will give you full value, and use it as a trade in for a new piece of jewelry to celebrate yourself?

eBay's an odd market; for many collectibles, buyers expect to be able to purchase online at a discount. We've actually been able to purchase things on eBay and sell them for a profit at local antique malls.

HAve you tried any local pawn shops or antique shops to see if they do consignment? Ebay is great but the shipping can be expensive - especially for breakable items. I would check locally first.

Unless I sold them as a lot, I don't think it would be possible to sell them individually. I think they are only worth about $20-$25 each. I have about 35 of them. If I sold them as a group that may work. I have never sold anything on consignment with an antique dealer, I'm not sure what they sould charge. I'm in the research mode. Not sure what makes the most sense.I am committed to getting rid of a ton of stuff. I just feel like I am downing in all of it sometimes.

Laura-
My advice would be to set a price in your mind and then go to Ebay to see if that price is being met or exceeded by similar items. If nothing is listed like what you have, or if there are lots of bids on similar items- I would Ebay. Usually it costs about $5 to list an item. Also how much does your local antique dealer charge on consignment?
