I have a suggestion but it isn't a book suggestion (hey my planner suggestion was a hit so maybe I'm good at this! ;) ). I'm just not sure where the best place to put it would be!

I LOVE the Farmgirl bloggers, you know the beach farmgirl, and the city farmgirl etc. I love all the different perspectives of living the farmgirl life in various settings. But what is missing?? A military farmgirl!! There are plenty of us with farmgirl spirit in the military but we have unique challenges. We don't usually own our homes. We move a lot, sometimes with very little notice, we often live in military housing where we may not have much yard or an area we are allowed to garden, we can't have farm animals, and we have no control over the size or layout of our house. Some of us live in other countries with rules and laws that can make living the farmgirl lifestyle. I would love to see (and share) ideas for how to make the best of our situation and live out our farmgirl spirit among these challenges!!

I've started a group of military farmgirls here in Germany and we certainly have our challenges but also have some really unique ways to live this life! (Raw milk vending machine anyone!?!).

Ok that is it, just my suggestion :).

Carol and I sent off another issue of MJF yesterday so now we can tackle our to-do list. Should we name the thread simply Military Farmgirls?

Shannon, we have only lived on base three times (plus once as a kid). While it hasn't all been wonderful I haven't had any issues that haven't also been issues in other rentals/apartments and even the HOA we owned a house in. Yes we have had loud neighbors but they weren't loud every night. Right now my biggest issues is the neighbor smokes on her porch, which is about 6 feet from my window so I breathe her smoke far more often than I'd like. It can be challenging but we haven't had any HUGE issues. As far as the grass or whatever they have to cite you multiple times before it can result in negative action and you won't be there long enough for that to happen. I wouldn't worry about it for the short time you will be there :).

Oh Shannon, I raised our son on many military bases in post housing all over the world and none of those things are true, at least on the bases we were stationed at! We had no horror stories, we enjoyed each and every base we lived on and every family we met. Was military housing without flaws of course not but then again neither was cilivian rental housing, you make the best of what you have for the time you have and be thankful your family is together. As you say it is just for a few months! I know you and your family have been through so much worse and pulled through, you will doing great. Enjoy your last few months of military life Shannon, you will miss it believe me! Good Luck to you and your family and thank you all so much for your service and sacrifice!

My hubby has served for over 19.5 years... we have been married for over 13.5 years... and for the first time, we are about to live on base housing. Yikes! Growing up as a "military brat," I have always heard HORROR stories about living on base housing... about the inspectors coming and measuring your grass each week with a ruler, of waiting until after you brought your dog back inside the house out of the backyard to see if there is any holes or feces, of fighting neighbors that keep you up all night, etc.... All of it leading to your spouse's first sergeant getting called and then the spouse is demoted or has paperwork written on them. Having 7 children and being so close to retirement, I am worried about the move. I keep telling myself that surely we can handle a couple months, without incidence. We shall see... we shall see...

With all of our military Farmgirls in mind, maybe this could be the start of a new merit badge? Patriot or victory farmgirl badge? Level one could be a patriotic wreath you made displayed on your front door. Second or third could be volunteering at your local USO or VFW?

Thanks Mary Jane that sounds like a good plan for the time being. Of course I don't want my suggestion to overwhelm you all-you already do SO much! And I can imagine being short handed means things are piling up. So absolutely we can chat here until a time comes when you are able to expand the idea however you see fit :).

Deb, Adam looks grand in his dress uniform. Pass it on to him my thanks for his service.

I have no one in the military now but I too would like to see a thread for military FarmGirls and their families.

As a retired Army wife and Aunt who has an active duty nephew I believe this is a Fabulous idea as well!

This is the perfect place for our permanent thread. We have so many military farmgirl sisters and families here so it will be nice to have a place where we can all come for support, sharing and just being together with others who understand. We are active duty families, veterans families who have so much to share and then there are our sisters who would like to learn and know about our military lives!

So Thank you Mary Jane and we look forward to the future of our Military thread with more to come.

God Bless all our Active Duty Military, stay safe and thank you all for your service!
My nephew Adam!

Our vote echoes everyone else's--it's a great idea and would be so very useful to so many of our farmgirls. With Gabe gone and SIL Lucas trying to do his already-more-than-full-time-job plus Gabe's, we are short-handed and are trying to figure out what we can get off his plate, not add something to it. It would take several days to set up a new farmgirl blogger because it feeds into our mail lists, our Sister Issue, Facebook alerts, Twitter accts., etc. plus our design team would need to come up with a header and then there's Wordpress itself (creating essentially a new blog), in addition to redoing our websites to accommodate the additional blogger. If we ever find a replacement for Gabe, then yes, it would be doable on our end. But for now, how about we make a permanent thread here for military farmgirl discussions? Would that work? It truly is a fabulous idea.

"Farmgirls with out Boarders".. life in the Military,, life abroad,,
whether you are active duty or not,, enlisted or married to a military person,,, or even the child of career military personnel... (I grew up on Military bases... daddy was career Army and meet and married my mother while stationed in Germany)
Life is so very different from Civilian life, and on Bases, which quite frankly are like extended families,, we take care of each other...
There are challenges,, from language, to culture,, weather and protocol. Unless you have a parent that is from the country that you are stationed in,,, and I wouldn't trade it for anything... I loved growing up as a military brat! :>)

Sabrina, I luv your idea!

Yes, we agree, it's a brilliant idea. Thanks Sabrina!

We've been more behind than ahead when it comes to website upkeep, etc. since Gabe left. It's been a steep learning curve for Lucas and Brian to pick up where he left off. But we'll definitely discuss the idea. It took Gabe several days total to launch a blogger, given all our various outlets. But we shall see!

Sabrina, I think this is a great idea, we should remember always our military soldiers and the their families.
My husband retired in 1996 after 23 years of service, so if you need anything, advice, help or anything I am here for all of our military wive's and family. We are family and one!

Oh wow Germany! What a beautiful country. I must say they take "farmer's markets" to a whole new level. Every chance you get on your free time you can incorporate the principles of Farm Girl so you will be living the philosophy. Buy local, buy fresh, visit with the vendors at the farmer's markets thanking them for their role in keeping high quality products available for people. Oh how I miss the yogurt in Germany. On your free time travel the villages and countryside, taking photos of how agrarian life is still integrated to a large degree there. So many different crops are grown in Germany. So many animals are raised on small farms. Wonderful textiles. Simple life, full and abundant living surrounded by scenery galore. Thank you for your service. Annie
