Part of what is so important to me and maybe to other farmgirls is the making of, recording and preserving of memories. I would love to hear about how other farmgirls do this, how they make memories with their family and friends, how they record them and preserve them for themselves and others for later. An example is my good friend who cartoons about her chickens--the cartoons are so cute, and fun to read, and it helps her remember all of the ladies who have shared her yard over the years. I bet there are many farmgirls who do more than write in a journal or take pictures. Another good example are the Sisters on the Fly. They make awesome quilts to commemorate the memories they have created together. I would be interested in reading about how others have done this in creative, fun, farmgirl ways.

Happy Trails!

Instead of doing your typical geneology "list" where you have peoples basic info, I added to it photo's, stories about the person & their lives if I knew them. Those still alive (my generation) wrote their own stories for me. I would like to have it reprinted so each of us gets a copy but just don't have the money right now. This way my nieces and great nieces and nephews along with my daughter will know about their great-great grandparents all the way to themselves.

My Aunt lived with us for 9 years and near the end of her life, I sat with her one day with the "book" I had put together and taped her speaking as she went through the book telling me her memories of various people, places, etc... After all, she lived with my great grandparents most of her life so she was able to leave for people like my great neices and nephews a first account of their relatives.

A few years ago for Father's Day, I gave my Dad, who will be 92 this week, a photo album of pictures I printed off the interent of where he grew up and during the years he lived there. I typed up what went with the story from where ever I got the photo and put it on the back side so he could read it and we would know what it was of. I was trying to make a "this is your life" kind of thing for him. Since then when other family have visited him, he has taken the book and told them all about his life while going through the photo's with them. It was a way to trigger his memories. Ideally I would like him to go through it with me so I could also record him but I can't find my recorder and he lives 1000 miles away. I would like to do this for my Mother too but she tells me she really hated her childhood so I'm hesitant.

But showing him a picture of a park in their town for instance triggered him to tell us how every Sunday after church his father would take him to this park but so they could go fishing to have food. Or the high schools in town triggered him telling us which one he went to and all about his high school days.

I don't know if that helps or not, but it's one way to learn about your elders anyway.

Rachel: I am a quilt maker. One idea I have is to save pieces of fabric from warn out clothing. Pictures can easily put on fabric and putting both together on fabric are easy. Or if you want to make a scrapbook, picture album or picture frame: jewelry, jack knives, pens, aprons, recipes, toys, lures, keys, etc. could be added. A journal or short sentence remembrances could be added. Hope these ideas help. Bonnie E

When my daughter got married, I gave her a quilt that had our family hands in the middle square. I traced my hands, my husband's and my sons in different fabric. The other squares sort of formed themselves representing things in her life - the horse, chickens, dancing, the house, vacations (a tent) and some other items. Once it got started both my husband and son came up with ideas on how to make it. Each block had a heart in the background and appliques of the different things. As I go through our pictures I will see if I can find it.

I felt the hands in the middle would represent us always being with her no matter where her travels take her.

She is now writing journals for each of her children and I wish I had thought of doing that. She started the day they were born. I don't know where she gets the time - but she puts a few sentences in each one every month. I know they are going to appreciate them when they are grown.

I think the journals are really great ideas. They don't have to be fancy, she just buys them at the store when one is filled. Though she has 4 going at once!

Rachel, I have been trying to come up with a way to do this for my wonderful daughters in law. They have different interests, but I would like them to have some recipes, memories and pictures, without it becoming a scrap booking project. I had in mind a sort of seasonal record of the farm, what to do when, like when to start tomato seeds, when to go hunt sand plums, and then how to make them into jelly, etc. Just not sure how to go about it other than I know I will use notebooks with pages in page protecters. That works so well if you want to take it into the kitchen and use it, or if the kids want to look at pictures. Does somebody that is a writer have any ideas for organizing this project?
