I was just thinking back on my high school days of home ec. and wood shop, and thinking that while the wood shop bit still comes in handy, what I really needed was "Farm Ec." Stuff like budgeting/grantwriting/finances in addition to the physical household/sewing/cooking things that are getting wonderfully covered here. Just an idea...

This would be so helpful. It's hard to find out about all the programs, grant writing, etc. when farming is "new" to a person/couple. We're playing catch-up and trying to get everything in order with our new place, and there's confusion about who actually owns the crop for this year, since we just bought the place. Anyway, my own particulars aside, it would be helpful to know where to begin to get information that will help with the business side of farm life.

We make a difference.

That sounds like something MY grandma would have said. I love it. So true.

Okay, so I was talking with my grandmother about budgeting and running a farm and I asked her if she had any advice for me (she's in her mid-nineties), and so here's what she said:

"It's easy once you internalize that you just have to spend less than you make. That's it."

Well - now, I suppose that IS it, distilled down to its most basic form, huh?

Thanks for the comments! It's an area that I could really use some help on sometimes...

I think this is a great idea and the title really fits.

Some people search for happiness; others create it.

That's a cute chapter heading! Economics is definately something new farm owners could use some tips on.
