I know what to get everyone this year except for my mom. She scrapbooks so usually I get her scrapbooking stuff but I am tired of doing that and want to do something different.

My mom and dad own a bed and breakfast (www.orchardhousebb.com). She is crafty but other than scrapbooking she hasn't done much else in recent years mostly cause they have been busy with the business. She had a small garden that was there when they bought the place but I think it was too much work with all the guests and stuff so she mentioned she may not plant again next year. She doesn't really collect anything so I am just at a loss for ideas.

Any help?

Valerie, I was laughing to myself after I read that you made baskets with Oklahoma grown foods and I thought how lucky you are to be from there and have a nice variety of things to work with. In Nevada we don't grow much except sagebrush and that isn't easy to make a gift of! Have fun! Cindy

Two years ago, I made my mom a scrapbook. I had never scrapbooked in my life, so it was a challenge. You said your mom scrapbooks, but have you made her a scrapbook with all your memories? What I did was got all the pictures of our family from when Dad and Mom got married, through our childhood, through our marriages, through all of her grandchildren. I started looking at the pictures, and so many memories came back. I just journaled the memories on brown paper with a black marker and arranged them among the pictures. Not a time goes by when I am at her house that someone is looking at that scrapbook and talking about memories! Mom cries everytime she looks at it. It wasn't fancy, but it was a gift of love.

This year we are doing food baskets, with Oklahoma grown foods, nuts, homemade soaps, bread I made, etc. She and my step-dad love that kind of thing.

I also have four families in our little town that I'm making gift bags for. They are kind of "fill-in" grandparents for my 8 year old son. He is welcome at their home anytime; one gentleman is teaching him how to care for horses! I'm going to put in knit dish-cloths I made, homeade cheddar/pepper bread, sugar cookies, hot chocolate mix, and homemade marshmallows. Not much, but just a thank you for their love to my boy!

Julie,

That's a great gift idea.

Julie, My Mom is hard to buy for too, so this year I bought a beautiful bird feeder, bird seed and a couple of goodies like a scoop for the seed and some suiet. Then had the store wrap it up in clear plastic and add a big red bow.

Maybe this gift is more for the birds than my Mom!

I did almost the same as Katie-ell suggested! I bought my mom beautiful soft pink fleece jammies, pink & purple sock/slippers (non skid bottoms), a box of chocolates, a collection of tea, two Laura Childs "tea shop mysteries" and a Pavarotti CD (she likes opera).

What about themed gifts? I really like the stationary idea, too... Are there any trips she might be taking this year, or any types of music she really loves? One year, I was taking my mother back to England to visit some friends, and she'd never been so I made her Christmas gift "english" oriented--got her a lovely raincoat, a basket full of shortbreads, teas, english stoneware mug, lemon curd, etc.., and also a book of british "sayings" and walking map of London. Another year, she was on this Aaron Copeland kick, so I found a recent biography about him, a PBS show on DVD about his life and works performed by a british orchestra, and the Martha Graham Company's Ballet Appalachian Spring on dvd...She seemed to really appreciate the thoughts that went into the whole gift(s). It was like a really nifty grab bag!

Just think of all of the roads there are...all of the things I haven't seen....yet.

I like the postcard idea Julie! I think those would be useful to her, and she would be proud to share who did the postcard. You can also go to someplace like Staples, where they can make inking stamps (not like stickers, but the ones where you stamp an image)of whatever you want. Maybe you could take your drawing and do something like that? When I priced it last for DH's business logo, it was going to cost less than $20.

Good luck! I'm having a hard time deciding on my mom too.

You guys have some great ideas unfortunatly they live 14 hours from here so some ideas I couldn't use. She is getting a copy of the farmgirl cookbook - I forgot about that. I like the stationary idea. I was thinking maybe I could draw a postcard design and have some postcards made that she could put into her guest packets.

I wish some of you guys were buying gifts for me! You had some great ideas! HAH!

A big chenille bathrobe (like the one I'm bundled up in right now!), bath accessories, a good book, Sleepytime tea, all gathered up in a pretty basket.

Stuff from King Arthur's catalog -- I was almost drooling over the catalog yesterday!

Holiday accessories for the B&B? Nice, prelit topiaries for the front hall, e.g., or for outside. Good silk amaryllis that will last from year to year and she'll never have to water them!

What about making a homemade book of gift certificates- redeemable with you! For instance once could be spring garden work. Another could be a weekend of scrapbooking- with you! Things like that.
ArmyWifey Posted - Dec 05 2006 : 10:16:22 PM
a pedicure certificate, books, new baking book and accessories in a pretty basket, a special ornament, something to start a collection, something special for the B&B.

If she knits, they have those new Knit Lites - knitting needles with little lights in the ends so you can knit in the dark, or in darkened rooms - great for knitting in bed.

What about something for the B&B, like a nice painting or knick knack that she could display in the foyer or one of the rooms? Check your local gift or antique stores...

Another idea - new cookbooks for recipes for her guests or for entertaining?

Or how about a nice new guest book for the B&B, something really nice... Or personalized stationery with her name and the B&B's name on it...

What about a weekend away? Could you hold the fort while she went away? Or maybe a Mom and daughter weekend so the guys could manage?
What about a concert, play or tickets to something she might enjoy at a museum? Does she read? Books are always good. Or lessons to something she always wanted to try like piano, pottery or painting?
Just some ideas I wish someone would give me, hope there's something for your Mom too!

with a happy heart
