Several years ago my mother gave me an artificial tree (apologies to all of you real-or-nothing sisters). We've been enjoying this same tree for more than thirty years, but never enjoyed putting on the lights. Because our house has ample storage, I fashioned a giant "pillow" case out of the least expensive sheet I could find by folding the sheet in half lengthwise and stitching down the length and across the bottom. Now I simply gather up the case like a sock, put the base of the tree (complete with lights) on the case and pull up the sides. I tie the top with whatever is handy and haul the whole thing to the attic. When Christmas arrives again, we remove the case, fluff the tree, and enjoy decorating with our favorite ornaments.
